Palo Alto, CA to require new homes to have EV wiring
« on: September 25, 2013, 08:48:44 PM »

According to news reports this morning, the city of Palo Alto, CA, passed an ordinance requiring all new homes in the town to be built with wiring that can accommodate Level 2 chargers in the garage.  Apparently electric vehicles of all types are very popular in the city and the city council wanted to make it easy for new home owners to own and charge EVs in the future.  However, there apparently was some hand-wringing about electric vehicles reducing gas tax revenues that would go to building and maintaining roads before the ordinance was finally approved.

Tax revenues are a tricky point.  We have the same problem here, there is no road tax but there is a duty on fuel.  Car drivers have this belief that cyclists (and i imagine therefore EV users also) should not be on the road because they dont buy fuel and don't pay the duty.   The reality is that the money from fuel doesn't go anywhere near the roads, it goes into general taxation.  So anyone who pays Income tax and sales tax is funding the roads.

Getting people to see this is a real challenge.
