How have you programmed ECO mode and why?
« on: June 15, 2013, 10:16:30 PM »

I'm thinking I might use ECO mode more if I set the parameters to 100% on all 4 settings. Right now it is set at 100% on braking and closed-throttle regeneration, 60 mph max speed and 25% torque because I was thinking that might work best for max. range, but I feel like I can control range just as well by judicious use of the throttle, so I just keep the mode button on Sport.

We have our ZeroMX setup for short oval dirt track racing.
Surprising to me was that it performs best in ECO mode.
We set the max rpm (aka mph) to what is needed for max speed
at the end of the straightaway (kinda like gearing on an IC machine).
Regen is set to 100% to help me start a slide at the end of the straight away.
Seems to work quite well. Of course, all settings are subject to change since this
 is a work-in-progress application.
We did get a class win after a few races (a world 1st for an electric in dirt track racing?).
It will be interesting to see what can be done in the future with this electric power.
Having 90lbs of batteries right beneath where an IC gas tank would be
(similar to riding with a 13gal gas tank between your legs) makes for cumbersome handling.
However, I rode it trying just 1 battery to try to improve the handling by reducing the 'up-top' weight by nearly 45lbs.  (races are only a few minutes long)
It certainly helped the handling, particularly during cornering where quickly changing lines is most important.
Of course, always looking forward to 'next years' batteries - with more power and less weight. :-)

rpms isn't an option on mine. We can set torque, speed, regen braking and throttle-closed regeneration. I have heard this before though. It is worth a try. In fact, I just re-set eco mode similar to what you have done. I'm re-charging at the moment, but will try it out in a couple hours if the rains hold off. Thanks. It is probably just a matter of time before someone with knowledge of controllers, etc. either replaces the controller or re-sets it to get more torque and speed, like Harlan I think did on the 2012s. I mean a full 68 ft. lbs of torque all immediately at take-off would put the bike in a wheelie or spin the tires, right?

To me, max rpm (aka mph) & speed are interchangeable on a direct drive machine.
On dirt (or any surface actually) any more torque than you have traction available is a waste.
If fact wheelspin usually just slows it down - or with excess traction it will make looping it become problematic.
Awhile back one guy commented (on another forum) that I mentioned I was tuning it for racing and he asked "on an electric what is there to tune?".  :-)

I use ECO mode as a way to limit max speed - I fact I would like to be able to set a lower max speed (aligned with urban regulations).
Also my reseller told me that with max torque, 0% regen the bike was even faster than in sport mode. I tried but did not notice a huge difference, though...

I thought about setting the max speed to 60mph so I can accelerate fast off the line but not go past 60 (so I won't get ticketed) on a road I use commonly where the speed limit is 55, but then I thought, well what if I need a burst of speed to get ahead of somebody. For now I really like the new settings...max everything. It gives me something akin to engine braking to assist the brakes the way I commonly use gears on my Gixxer and I like that. I can't see that there is more or less torque or speed over the Sport setting this way though, but the regen. is much higher than in sport mode for both coasting and braking, just as you would expect.
