My other electric ride
« on: February 20, 2013, 09:05:38 AM »

Today I picked up a Mitsubishi iMIEV from the dealer and now use only electric transportation!  My Zero S will take me on "long" trips and my iMIEV will keep me dry and safe in the rain and snow.

Anybody else got a 4 wheeled electric vehicle, too?

Not yet. A Tesla would be a nice complement to my Zero DS.

I have a Nissan Leaf.  I bought it the morning after I moved to California.  I chose it for a few reasons: the obvious, promoting a technology with big long-term environmental benefits (we can argue about how big they are with present electricity generation and battery production processes); not having to learn how to maintain a gas engine; and one-upping a friend who was very proud of his (non-plug-in) Prius.  So when I became interested in motorcycling, naturally that one had to be electric too; I like the idea of not disturbing the beautiful places I visit with noise and emissions.  To go far-away places, I have to wait for my mom to visit and rent a car, but otherwise I'm not looking back.

I drive a Volt. My commute is that little bit to long to have a pure BEV just yet with the current ranges offered. I could probably make the trip in the summer with a Leaf but the winter here is to cold and the range reduction would leave me stranded.  The Volt is an amazing car, I love it.

How do you like the iMiev? It's a cool looking city car!  When I saw one at the autoshow it struck me as the true modern torch bearer of the old air cooled VW Beetle. You know, straight forward practical transportation that should be bullet proof reliable for years to come. No frills, just a great car.

Nice ride Ben,

The spec sheet says 62 miles of Range.   Do you find that to be close to reality?

Where I live we need a good AWD system and around 80 miles of usable range in cold weather so I don't see any options that make as much sense for me as just burning some gas in the winter months.

Finally warm enough to ride the Zero to work today here in Idaho!

So far I've only driven the iMIEV in cold and often rainy/snowy conditions so the range has been less than ideal.  However, after a few hundred miles, the range has been getting closer to 60mi.  Looking forward to better weather and longer range, although I mostly drive a 40 mile round trip to NYC, then can take the subway anywhere I want to go.

This car is definitely not for everyone, but it fits my needs just fine.  I've enjoyed driving it and have found negative reviews online to be inaccurate.  So far it's been a good car for me.

Now that the weather is getting warmer I can't wait to get back on my bike!
