Where to get rid of parts?
« on: June 06, 2012, 03:57:34 AM »

I'm stripping down a honda CBR (1995) and other than craigslist and ebay, are there any other places that you guys know of that might take the used parts? I'd like the engine to go towards another bike after being rebuilt and I'd rather not take it to a scrap yard where it will sit and rust. I'm in the Las Vegas area, so anyone local have any recommendations? What about non-locals? I've never gotten rid of parts like this before. Everything I've gotten rid of has been hauled to a junk yard and I'd like to see these parts give life to someone elses project.

Try freecycle or craigslist free, I have had great success with getting rid of wierd stuff there. You never know who might need the items you're offering.

I'd still like to sell the parts, but for a significantly reduced cost. I need some money to help pay for some of the EV parts. I see stuff like the coolant reservoir going for $50, I'd probably sell it for $20. I also see exhaust setups going for $100, I'd probably only expect $50 or $35. The thing is, I'm not sure they're selling. Either the posters aren't pulling the ads when they sell or they just aren't selling.

Best I can do is post them I guess, but I just wanted to see what other venues there are for selling parts.

My son-in-law spent months getting an old Honda VT750D to run. But it lacked a passenger seat and the gas tank leaked like a sieve.  He coated the tank with goop, put the bike on Craigslist at 10pm (with the list of its ills) with an asking price of $2000. Within an hour he had four offers and sold it the next day. A new tank cost about $600 and a junk yard tank wasn't much less at $500.  There are a lot of people on Craigslist that seem to want to buy stuff. I would give that a try.

Holy crap. Because I have a gas tank that's pretty decent (slight paint scratches where the keys hang down) but it holds gas just fine. I guess I could sell that or trade it for a bad tank. I only need a tank for cosmetic purposes, not functional since it's an electric bike. I guess that's another issue I have. Pricing the parts. Since I'm new to the motorcycle scene, all I've worked on are cars and trucks I have no idea how to price motorcycle parts.

Exactly..... join a CBR forum and offer a good condition gas tank. Either trade or sell it. People spend lots of time and money looking for replacements in good shape, especially older motorcycles.

In fact, selling/trading my gas tank is how I met one of my best friends.... I responded to his post looking for a tank for my bike, I emailed him and told him about my electric motorcycle and we have been friends since.

My suggestion would be to visit Bike Bandit, or another site that has OEM parts diagrams and prices. Check out the new parts prices for your bike and offer them at half price.

I've been having absolutely no luck with the parts thus far. I'm about to take them to a metal recycling center. Do you guys know if they'll take an entire engine and give cash for it?

I'm basically at a halt with my project because I can't repair the frame until I get the motor so I know how it'll be mounted. I can't get the motor until I have at least a bit of cash from the parts.

go to a motorcycle parts yard, or a wrecking yard and see if you can get money for the core. My friend got like $100 for the engine.

Or join a forum for your motorcycle and sell the parts there.

I've been trying to join a few forums, but I'm waiting on admin approvals for the accounts. I think this weekend I'll check out a few motorcycle scrap yards, but I dont think vegas has one.
