Hello From NC.. Have a Project idea to kick out there......
« on: January 26, 2012, 09:47:59 PM »

I build, buy and sell bikes and parts and such....Have a 83 Yamaha XJ650 shaft drive that I thought might make an interesting electric bike. Seems like the drive shaft thing might be advantagous, and came across this site as a likely source of ideas and info. I have been wanting to do an electric bike for a while now.

I currently have a 78 Kaw KZ750 LTD that is a pristine bike with only 2,200 miles, and am building a Honda CB750 cafe bike. Any input would be appreciated......

the big thing will be the final gear ratio for the motor shaft to the wheel axle. Normally we run anywhere between 4 and 5:1 for most motors. Some people go 3.5:1, some go to 6:1. Start out by finding the shaft drive gear ratio. If it's too low, you'll have to do a jackshaft with a gear reduction before it goes to the shaft drive.

Other than that, it's no different. It'd be quiet as hell!

Chain drive's are usually easier to convert in that they only have one gear reduction.
