inquiry concerning 2010 DS deliveries

Hello, all: I'm just wondering if anyone who is NOT a dealer has taken delivery of a 2010 Zero DS yet? I was told mine (ordered at end of May) wouldn't be ready until the end of July/early August.Well, here we are, though I knew the original delivery date estimate was probably an over-optimistic number; so I'm interested in getting a reality check from anybody outside of Zero. In particular, I'm trying to figure out how the factory output is moving along this year in Santa Cruz. So, if you could let us know when you ordered your 2010 DS, and when it was eventually delivered to you, that would be a great service to myself and probably others out there who are waiting with sadly empty electrical sockets in their garages, waiting to charge their new Zeros...

I got my 2010 S right on time based on the revised expectations in the letter I got from the CEO in the Spring. (End of June shipping.)

I also ordered my DS at the end of May and was told that same as you. I called Zero last week to inquire and was told that it looked like the date was pushed back to the end of Aug! I "politely" complained to the director of sales and got an email the next day saying my DS would ship this week! No shipping conformation yet but they said by Thurs or Friday this week. Of note, they also mentioned that they are getting tons of bikes shipped out this week. It sounds like this is the first batch to individual costumers. They have been spending most of their production on the S model up until now. I'll post when I get the shipping notification!

Rewski: I hope they make good on their word over there at Zero and you get your DS soon, but it always irks me when a guy's gotta be the "squeaky wheel" to get things done  >:(  I've made those kind of phone calls before... and I guess I can do it again. Just seems like bad form on the part of a manufacturer. Anyhow, living in Colorado, our riding season is short, so I'm feeling motivated to make the call and make some of my own "polite" inquiries  ;) Who did you talk to at Zero when you called them?

I hope they keep their word too! I spoke with Dan Spellman via email throughout the purchase process because I too mentioned that way back in May that I only wanted to purchase the bike if they could "guarantee" the ship date of end of July/beginning of Aug because of the "cold" season approaching. I would do it. Get your bike. As long as your polite it can't hurt. Good luck!

Toom,

Zero has a history of jerking people around when it comes to a delivery date. I had a Zero S on order for 13 months and just couldn't take it anymore. And there are people on this forum who had them on order for a lot longer than that. The sales people at Zero act like the image most people have of used car salesmen. They are true BS artists who will promise everything and deliver nothing. Just my experience with the company. Sure hope yours is better. Good luck.

My D/S arrived Monday afternoon. After uncrating, which took about 30 minutes, I called Zero and talked to John to find out how to turn the thing on. After just a few minutes of fiddling with the battery emergency shut-off switch, it was up and running. I drove it around Boulder yesterday, racking up about 30 miles, and the battery level was down to about 1/4 by the end of the day. When I was done, the bike was making the beep-beep-beep-beep-beeeeeeeep sound to indicate that the charge level was reaching the minimal acceptable level. So, all in all, it seems to be working as expected. I got up to a maximum speed of about 61 mph for a brief stretch of highway on my commute to work. Given that I weigh a hefty 230 lbs., that also seems quite acceptable.

So, now it is off to the Colorado DMV to get the bike registered. However, I was informed by Christy that I should be able to drive the bike right out of the box, using the temporary registration in CA that was provided in the package of paperwork that came in the crate with the bike; thus, my adventures in riding around town yesterday.

Congrats Toom! Now I know there are three of us in the Denver/Boulder area who have taken deliveries. Enjoy the ride! I've almost got 500 miles on my DS since taking delivery last month!

Thanks, Adam. I'm currently using the DS on my daily commute to work: That's 16 miles a day. Throw in some change for errands and lunch runs, and I seem to be coming in close to 25-30 miles per day. So, I should be racking up the miles about as fast as you are...

... until the snows arrive. (Actually, I'm very curious to see how the Li-ion batteries work in cold temperatures. I'm also on the wait list for the Nissan Leaf, so I'm seeing this experience with the Zero as a test case for the technology.)

I've started the process of looking into the availability of charging stations at work, downtown Boulder, and CU. I'm kind of surprised to find there are still so few available, given all the hype about how Colorado is embracing the green energy future. Another case of "all talk, no action," I guess. I found a ChargePoint charging station on the CU campus next to the new Wolf Law building, but you must have a CU parking permit to make use of it. (http://lawweb.colorado.edu/news/showArticle.jsp?id=607). I've also heard (by talking to some of the CU staff in their parking division) that it has a tendency to break down.

Have you had any luck finding public charging stations?

Toom,

I've not come across any official public charging stations, but I have found many free regular outlets near where I live and work that I have been able to get a charge. I only commute about 14 miles round trip so I typically just charge at home in my garage. The garage at my work has several outlets throughout. Also in my neighborhood (Stapleton) there are several places with outlets in the planter boxes around the town centers, and also in the Northfield shopping center there are "free" outlets on all the light poles. The more I ride around the more ofter I see more outlets!

The farthest I've gone on a charge is about 33 miles. I finished with about 3 bars left at rest but with a moderate acceleration it dropped the bars to zero and I got the flashing range alert. Once I backed off the accelerator I got a bar back and finished the ride. The interesting part is that I charged it with a kill-a-watt meter to see how many kilowatt-hours I used and it only put back in 3.2 kWh into the battery. It is supposedly a 4 kWh pack with about 3.7 kWh usable so I bet the 40 miles of range is pretty close to the max, unless you are at parade speed!

Adam,

I'm getting very similar numbers for range. My guess is that I won't be taking the bike on rides much longer than 30 miles without starting to break into a cold sweat. Also, the amount of charge left at the end of my commute depends very strongly on how I ride: If I'm late for a meeting and pushing the envelope on the high end as a result, the bars definitely go down a lot faster than if I'm more relaxed and staying at the speed limit all the way in.

The dependence of the bars on throttle position is annoying, but unavoidable given that they use the measured voltage on the battery as a indicator of remaining charge. The way batteries work (all batteries, I believe), the more current you suck out of them, the lower their output voltage. It's a physics thing. So, my guess is that a more accurate determination of battery charge while under load is possible, but it will require a much more sophisticated algorithm to achieve, and this technology is just too new to expect such things, as of yet. Perhaps the new generation of EV cars (like the Nissan Leaf) will have such algorithms built in. For the time being, however, I think the only way to really know the remaining charge on the Zero is to roll off the throttle and then check the bars while the bike is either coasting or at a standstill.

I was pulled over yesterday by a cop at my place of work for riding without a license plate. (I work at the US Dept. of Commerce, and we have our own federal police force over there.) Christy at Zero told me I can ride the bike without plates as long as I carry that little strip of paper that came in the paperwork that identifies the bike and Zero as the dealer. (Here's the direct quote from the email I received from Christy:"You can legally ride your bike right out of the shipping crate. There is a small slip of white paper (was detached from California DMV forms) that says “New Vehicle Dealer Notice Temporary Identification” that is your temporary registration until you register and receive license plates from your DMV in Colorado.") Turns out, that's a load of cr@p. But the cop was nice and didn't issue a citation. (I think he was somewhat intimidated by the challenge of filling in the section of the citation that has the # of cc's for the bike... He kept asking me, "So, how many cc's is it?", or "Is there an equivalent cc rating for the bike?" or "So, how fast can it go," etc...) So, I'm now working with the good folks at the Boulder DMV on registering the DS. Turns out, they still remember the process required to get your bike processed, so I don't think it will end up being quite the ordeal you had to deal with. They also have the same problem with looking up the VIN in their data base, though, as per your suggestion, I did get the new Certificate of Origin from Zero with CPI listed as the manufacturer, so they will be working with Alma at the DMV in Denver over the phone to take care of the details. (My guess is that CPI actually makes the bike over in Taiwan, under license from Zero.)

In the meanwhile, I've got my temporary plates, and I'm back on the road. But, this time legally.

Two years and one week after placing my order for the DS it finally shipped on August 19th. I got the bike on August 21st.

The plus side of my long wait was that I was grandfathered into the original 9K price and the factory very nicely comped me the low Corbin seat.
