Twist Grip Potentiometer Wiring
« on: February 22, 2010, 02:02:12 AM »

I'm using a Magura Twistgrip potentiometer with a Sevcon Millipak 4Q and having some trouble. When I check it with my multimeter it starts at 5kOhms and goes to 0 as you turn it.  How do I switch that?  The manual says to do go from 0 to 5.

Also, are there any tips for getting a pin out of the 16 port connector?  I'm having some difficulties.

Ok, i did a little more reading and I think I figured it out.  But I still need to redo a couple pins, any advice?

Man, that Sevcon controller REALLY gave me a hard time the first time around. I wish I had some better advice.

The potentiometer can be either 0-5k or 5k-0 depending on which way the three leads are wired though.  Sevcon controllers as I remember it required EVERYTHING to be in order before they'd close the contactor and supply power to the circuit.  The flash code that the green LED provides should indicate if there's anything out of order.  I didn't like the Sevcon controller.  It was a real pain in the ass.

But I am a newbie too and there is where I failed.  I said that I was going to use the Etek/Alltrax combination next time specifically to avoid the headache of Sevcon controllers.

tbh, the nature of the beast means that everything has to be wired up properly. Anyone starting an electric bike project should have a firm grasp on the basic principals of electronics, ohms laws etc. This is all 17yr old science class education stuff anyway. Without this background it's very difficult for others to give you good enough advice.

but yeh, as to the op, potentiometers generally have 3 pins and by swapping one round you go from 0-5k to 5-0k, just check it with a multimeter.
