DSR/X: Gates Carbon Drive Moto X9™ belt, 25 mm wide.
« on: May 28, 2024, 12:26:22 AM »

Has anyone already broken or changed the belt on a DSR/X?

Given that the power delivered from the motor is about the same as for the SR/F, I would have expected that the positive changes (22/90t vs. 20/90t SR/F/S and 25 width vs. 20 mm) would mean more distance between replacements, but no, we still read the same 24K mi (37K km) interval in the user's manual.

I have 47'000 mi on my SR/F, never broke a belt, kept the previous two, and they still look like fresh out the Gates factory. Is this just pure luck? Since I will be riding on gravel and dirt roads only as my last options, I am pretty sure the belt should last me well over 35'000 mi.

Any thoughts?

Maybe it is luck (or lack thereof)*, both my last two belts lasted just 7k miles on ordinary roads at ordinary trundling speeds.

Cas :)

Just because a belt doesn't look worn does not mean it is not.  The newer synthetic materials they use now don't always show wear the way the old fashioned belts do, and you know it's weak when you are stranded somewhere.

On which bike?  I recall a message here that the SR/F had a string of bad belts from the factory that was later fixed.

SR/F. But without batch numbers it's not very helpful ...
One of those belts was a brand new one ordered only last year. I think the real problem was the dealer overtightening the belts both times.

I must have a big problem.
motorcycle 44,000 kms I will mount the 5th belt
my belts are perfectly fitted and tensioned correctly every time.
This weekend I'm changing everything, belt, pinion, and crown.
I have clearly visible wear on the pinion and the crown, and have you noticed this and at what mileage?

Seems to me that everything on every Zero is overtightened from new. Are you sure the dealers are doing the belts?  I know some bikes are delivered completed. I think Energicas are, for an example. Anyway, I have noticed the same, new Zeros all have a very tight belt. But so far, my DSR/X belt has been holding up. I did not readjust it and it is still too tight after several thousand miles.

How you drive the bike also has a huge influence on the wear as well.
If you are a regular commuter, just going to / from work, maybe an occasional weekend ride, running like a normal person, normal speeds, no read hard accels, then it may last quite a while.  If you like to romp it, and do a lot of high torque starts and high speed runs, then it won't last as long.

It was driven by an old lady from ZPasedena, who only drove it on sundays, to goto church with, and the church was just down the block  8)

Looks like your rear pulley has a decent amount of wear in the centre of the teeth, interesting that it's not along the entire width. Your front pulley however looks like it is significantly worn with that hard lip on the left and the teeth look to be a lot narrower than they used to be.

I couldn't find the spec for any of the older models either. I suppose it's not really important as it shouldn't really take much of any load, it just needs to be tight but not silly tight and then the loctite stops it backing out.

thank you, I will tighten it moderately, with a little loctite.
