Pit Bull Trailer Restraint System
« on: May 02, 2023, 06:27:52 AM »

Has anyone seen these or tried it with any of the Energica bikes yet.  I am very interested in getting one as it looks about the easiest to one person trailer this heavy ass bike with !!

My concerns are, ok so you chock it by holding it at the rear axle, but the front end is essentially left to slide anywhere?  No restraints up front.  I can't see how that thing WONT slide sideways slightly, putting horrible torsional forces on your axle, front wheel turning slightly, bike sliding / falling slightly up front and now you got yourself a real pickle to deal with!!

Yes you can tie down the front end, but according to them this is not necessary.  My concern is, if this bitch tips in the trailer I am NOT going to get it up w/o help let alone the damage you are going to cause to lights, fairing etc stuff.

Comments?  Experiences with it?

Thank you
Aaron

Appears sturdy enough to me.
And looking at the safety pins and how they are secured I think someone really put some thought into that.

Anyway that fastening beats other constructions by far as this one (that one I wouldn't trust).

My local Zero dealer uses them to trailer an SR/S and other bikes to the track.  They work just fine.

Pros and cons.  My friends use them to bring their bikes to the track, (not Energicas) but I decided against them.

Like you said, the front wheel can go without a restraint, but you run the risk of dropping the bike trying to get pit bull restraint engaged while doing so, so most folks I know still use a front chock.  In that case, the benefit is not all that substantial.

Watch the video below.  if you need to shimmy the bike around a bit to get the axle in place, how easy is that going to be with an energica?  Driving the bike forward into a front wheel chock gives you peace of mind that the bike will not fall.

Unless of course you roll your trailer, in which case, only the pitbull will save your bike, but I doubt it would save the Energica due to weight.

THAT is what I am concerned about.

The only thing holding your bike is a rod thru the rear wheel and the chock  bolted to the floor of your trailer.  There is NOTHING to keep your front end from sliding any during say a hard turn (think evasive lane change because some mil / z douche is on their phone and pulls in front of you)  So your front slides.  This torques the hell out of your back wheel via it's axle thru bolt.  Ok now that front wheel turns the bike dips and it slides further because it's tipping over up there.  Now you are really twisting this thing on that wheel axle.  Remember the only thing holding that wheel on is it's two bolts, torqued to what 52 lb/ft ?  Humpty bumpty on the road is one thing, a solid twist with almost 600 lbs of mass on it is entirely another.

What happens when you go over a rough train crossing?  that bang bang up and down puts terrible stress on those bolts in the floor holding the bottom pad down.  Did they actually nut and bolt it or thick bladed self tappers?  How hard to tear that out, especailly after a few back and forth stresses of the bike stressing on it after a turn.

In theory it looks really nice, very easy to get the bike in and out, that heavy bitch is NOT fun maneuvering in a trailer at 1 mph and can tip way too easily, especially on the 20 degree grade of the down ramp if you are not careful!  But that front end left to just flap in the breeze with all that weight troubles me.

I might end up getting one, and reporting on it after using it a bit.  I really would love for it to work as advertised, but at the same time, don't need to try to find 2 men and a boy to try to help me upright this thing jammed kitty corner in a trailer after a ride somewhere and it went over.

I bought one for the coming ego race bike, but I also have a Baxley sport chock to bolt to the floor of my current trailer.
When get worked up to a track van, it will still be locked down front and rear.
