Helmet smartphone assistant
« on: June 13, 2023, 09:44:20 PM »

Not strictly related to Zero specifically, sorry, but hopefully someone can help. I am looking for getting some solution for hands free assistant with my Android mobile while driving.

I have a Sena product today (forgot the exact mode, less than a year old), but seems no matter what I do it wont listen to "go google" using the microphone in the headset, instead it insist on using the mic on the phone for that even though it is sending audio to the helmet speakers correctly. I installed the latest firmware and tinkered with the settings to the best of my ability.

I do have a mount for my smartphone, so it is in fact picking up my voice at low speeds, but at anything over 30km/h the wind starts drowning out my voice. So, basically only good for when parked, which is about as useful as it sounds.

I also tried the Samsung buds pro 2, but does not seem to be able to catch my voice when driving at high speeds either.

Anyone here have some experience with a good working solution? Either earbuds or in-helmet headset?

I use the Cardo System and have had very good luck with it.
Yah at higher speeds wind noise can get to be a problem.  Is there a setting somewhere where you can set the sensitivity of the mic?
Cardo has that so you can fine tweak how sensitive the mouth piece is to overcome this, however since the activation word is 'Hey Cardo'...  or pretty much, "hey XXX" for what you got, I can't see how being a bit too sensitive can be an issue.. if you don't say the right word sequence it won't work.

If the app itself you are using does not have an input sensitivity maybe your phone does?  I know Waze gives me shit sometimes and you have to play games with it and google.

You sure your microphone is actually working at all, like if you make a call and cover the microphone on your phone the other person can hear you through the one in the helmet? If not and you're lucky it could just be that the connection is unplugged, they're small and not the most secure.

I also have a Cardo and it picks up my voice fine, although I don't have the quietest helmet so I have to talk a bit louder at higher speeds.

I can't speak highly enough about Cardo Systems. They're not perfect, but they are about as close as I've been able to find, and the Android integration works flawlessly. I've used both the Packtalk Bold and now the Edge. I use a full face helmet and frequently VLOG through the Audio Recorder on the phone. No wind noise whatsoever, even at high speeds. This may be specific to your helmet, however.

The wind noise I would say is also dependent on the app.
I have a Shoei higher end helmet. If's full face so any noise that does get in there gets amplified sort of.  With one recorder the wind noise is like a hurrricane.  With the cardo almost un noticeable.

My android phone is ancient by todays standards.  I think it's a note 7 and even that old dino still works pretty picture perfect with the cardo packedge.  It's a bit pricey but is totally retroactive to older models and even other people's systems as I was able to even link up with one of my friends who has some brand I never heard of,said he had it for a few years now.

Working around turbines for 40 years, I am a bit deef, and really wish they had a better bass boost but if you are not doing 70 mph even off the air radio sounds good with it's provided speakers.

Ill have to check if there is an upgraded speaker set for them or another brand you can throw in for more volumetric movement for the bass.

Yes, I am sure the mic is working because I can speak to people calling me just fine while riding, even at high speeds.

The problem is only related to waking up and talking to the assistant. The assistant is only using the mic on the phone itself, which of course will be deafened by the wind since it is outside the helmet, without any wind protection on the bike's phone mount.
