Left Hand Rear Brake Control for Energica
« on: March 26, 2023, 09:49:39 PM »

For those who enjoy the use of the rear brake, either for slow speed maneuvering, or high performance control while at lean angle, left hand rear brake is a great tool.

I used a Qnium rear master and a Magura left hand hydraulic master, connected by a brake line.  Stock brake pressure banjo switch and stock rear brake lines were reused.

Rear brake pedal functionality is maintained.

Interesting video by a moto GP rider on how they use rear brake:

Not posting much on the owners group on Facebook.

I find it to be hard to use compared to the Forum style.

I also find the information is not as helpful as that found in the forums.  Just my opinion.

Too much fan loyalty or excessive criticism to be helpful.  In general.  Again, just my opinion, and  full respect to those who maintain it.

This forum is great.  We just need a few thousand more members.

Another pic of the dual port rear master:

How much did you spend on all the parts?

Do you ride ICE bikes too? So you find difficult to switch from clutch to brake on that lever?

Yes, I ride ICE.  Track and street.

Left hand rear brake on all my bikes.  Hypermotard, Tuono, R6, Grom.

It takes little time to adjust to having a clutch and brake lever on the same bar.  Most the bike have quickshifters, so I only use clutch for getting into first gear.

It cost about $600 in parts, but can be done for less if you source alternatives.  A vacuum bleeder is a big help.

Once you get used to having the additional control, you will feel uncomfortable riding any bike without it.  Downside to consider.

You could use a junction block for the existing Brembo master.  Not as effective.

I just use the regen for most of my braking TBH.  I do find the rear brake position by the foot rest a bit.. annoying TBH.  If I find myself in a hard braking situation, half the time the feet are already down waiting for the spring back off the front shock to catch the bike.  Maybe I haven't ridden enough but find that I almost never really use the rear brake.  Once you get used to the regen you can pretty much feather that to control  your stop or turn.

Pace and direction.

Agree that the regen is almost a substitute for the brakes.  At a comfortable pace, you can pretty much control your speed with throttle alone.

The need for more brake becomes an issue as the pace picks up.   Going along a bit more quickly on the straights increases reliance the brakes to get slowed and pointed in and out of the corners.

Control of direction, setting and adjusting the line when ON the throttle midcorner, or on exit, can be overlapped with rear brake for directional control adjustment.  You can be opening the throttle to wide open and using rear brake (never the front) to help steer.

Not the street, but watch how much rear brake gets used to control the bikes direction:

Rear brake is also for better control at low speed (< 7 km/h). You operate the brake against a constant push from the motor. Tremendous effect!
With regen alone that is not working as good (my experience).

There are lots of vids on Youtube, e.g. with topic of how to do a tight u-turn in one go.

This video is from my morning ride.

You want the full use of front and rear brake.  This slowdown required full fork compression with heavy front and rear brake use, modulated by hand, while at lean angle, to avoid hitting a deer.  The deer did not have as well developed a skillset, and lost traction ...   ;D
