Warning Triangle and Live Indicator Flashing alternately
« on: November 09, 2022, 10:26:12 AM »

Has anyone seen this flashing combination as shown in the youtube video below?  By slowing down the video I think it is 3 red flashes, a pause and 3 more red flashes.   In the manual that comes up as Battery Temperature Sensor Fault.   But then the green live indicator flashes.  Nothing in the owners manual about green flashes.

This occurred just after charging to 100% and letting the bike balance the cells for about an extra hour.   To charge, I used the on board charger, giving it 220 volts through a modified OEM C13 charging cable.   I usually charge the bike via my level 2 charger and the charge tank.   But I didn't need a big charge so I just used the OBC.

I then connected the bike through bluetooth to the new Zero app on my iPhone to check the cell balance.   The new app seems to only allow you to look at the performance and battery data when the bike is live.  You have to switch the motor stop switch off to see those screens.  I think that is when the flashing started.

I was able to ride the bike despite the weird flashing.

Several hours later I checked and the flashing is gone.   The bike shows 0000 for error code, which I guess is 0 errors.

As a mater of fact, yes I have seen a similar occurrence on my 16 DSR.

Some background………
Battery was changed about 1.5 yrs ago.
About 1.5 months ago I hit a deer & bike sustained moderate front end damage including a crack on the right strut that ties main/top frame to battery/bottom frames. I did not see any damage to the battery/box.

Two days ago it rained lightly during my AM commute & towards the end of the 25 miles I knowticed similar rapid flashing from red triangle & green circle.
The PM commute started out dry & I did not notice any abnormalities but then turned wet & abnormal light pattern appeared.
Bike has 76k miles at this point.
No change in performance.
Will report here if anything changes &/or is discovered.

I sent the video to ownersupport at Zero.   I'll update if they have some info.

I've also got an appointment on Friday to do a DSR/X test ride with the Zero Tour here in Florida.   I was planning on riding my 2018 SR there to do the demo.   Who knows.  Maybe they will make me a great offer on a trade in, I will ride home on a DSR/X and this won't be my issue.   ;)

Issue is back today.  New video with error codes.

Test ride of DSR/X is rescheduled to Dec. 9 due to hurricane.

In the video I hear what appears to be blustering wind & you mention hurricane.
Anyway the bike got wet when this issue started?

Also I limit my charges to about 70% (via built in spring wound timer) so in my case it appears to be moisture related.

Windy day here but no rain yet.   Bike has not gotten wet in months.  It is parked in a garage and always has been.  Even when it did get wet from riding in some rain, it wasn't heavy rain.

The plot thickens……
I was convinced my issue was moisture related.

So today I took the bike to my nearest Zero dealer first thing in the morning for them to hook it up to their computer and figure out the issue.   The same dealer also had the Zero Demo Tour on their lot today.   So I figured that was a great thing to combine together.   Ride my bike to get it sorted and test ride the new DSR/X.

Well the dealer did a firmware update on it and unfortunately, the bike died (not sure if it is the BMS or MBB).  They were on the phone with Zero support quite a bit I understand.   And need to rub some kind of flow chart functions.  So the bike is still at the dealer.

While waiting for my wife to come and give me a ride home, I had the chance to ride the DSR/X 3 times.   The first ride was good.  The bike itself is so smooth and comfortable.   More power than my SR.   The second ride was just more of a tease.   So when my wife showed up, I took her on a ride 2up.   Now it it really hard to resist.

So I've asked the Zero guys at the demo tour to see what they can help me work out for a trade in on my SR and a deal price on one of the demo DSR/Xs.    It is the last stop on the tour.   They just need to leave one behind for me with a great discount.   ;)

Zero offered a great discount on the demo DSR/X but the dealer offered about 50% or less of a fair value on my 2018 SR with charge tank for trade in.  The dealer told me he found multiple other SR models similar to my bike for sale @ $6000 and thus couldn't go any higher.   Not wanting to carry 3 bikes or sell the SR privately I passed on the deal.

The dealer has my SR for repair since the firmware update done by the dealer killed the bike.   Hopefully it will end up being something covered under the battery warranty and repaired quickly.   It is good riding weather in Florida right now too.   But I only have my FXS to ride and that is a short distance, single passenger bike.

Update on this problem.   After a month, the dealer has finally done all the testing on all the components on my 2018 SR with charge tank.   That meant pulling the battery and disconnecting lots of components.   All the components including the battery and BMS test fine on their own.   Zero tech support can only come up with replacing the entire wiring harness as the solution.
Quoted cost:   $1800 parts and labor!!!   And likely another 2 to 4 weeks in the shop until they finish.

Pretty disappointing performance considering the bike has lived in a garage since new, has less than 3000 miles and only gotten a little wet once since I owned it (I don't think the previous owner ever rode in the rain).

Thought I should do a followup to this.

TL:DR; Bike is fixed with new controller and BMS.  Out of pocket cost to me was $0.  Time without the bike was 79 days.

Happy days.   After 79 days I've got my 2018 SR back fixed.   Paperwork indicates they replaced both the controller and the BMS.   Ultimately, Zero replaced both at no charge as goodwill.   Having the issue happen at the Zero demo event back in December and talking at length to the district sales manager  likely helped with that goodwill.   Also having the repair take so long and be so difficult for the dealer to diagnose also probably helped.   My understanding is that the dealer actually had a Zero technician (actual Zero employee I understand) come in to install the controller, which cleared up some of the issue but not the entire issue.  Then the Zero technician had to come back again to install the BMS.   The invoice I received from the dealer indicates 3 hours of shop time.  Seems low to me.   I think I spent at least that much with them on the phone following up regularly (I'm sure Brooklyn at Xtreme Powersports will be happy not to have to field my phone calls).

In the meantime, I am still very happy with my 2017 FXS (also had a BMS replaced under warranty a couple of years back).   And my bike stable has grown with a used 2023 R1250GS I picked up from someone who made a mistake in purchasing it.

I don't need 3 motorcycles though.   I suspect the SR will eventually be put up for sale.    If I do sell the SR, I could see myself also selling the FXS and moving to a DSR/X (assuming I could find a used one for a reasonable price eventually).  I think that would be a good short range compliment to the BMW.  I really did like the 3 test rides I took on the DSR/X back in December.

Glad to hear of such a positive outcome. Zero does care and hopefully they can feed back their learnings into their designs. That can be priceless.
