Help with ideas....Newbie
« on: June 08, 2010, 04:10:57 AM »

I am starting a new project that will be a Race bike. The donor bike is a 2003 GSX-R 600. I plan on using a GMS M1 motor (http://www.greenmotorsport.com/green_motorsport/products_and_services/3,1,388,17,12958.html) with LiffePo4 batts (I was thinking LifeBatt, but am open to suggestions). I plan on the bike having good acceleration coming off corners, but also be able to hit 130+MPH down the straights. I would need like a 40 or 45 mile range to meet length of race  (with some extra juice to get it back to the trailer). Any ideas about this would be very helpfull, as I am new to all this. I do have a team of people that have lots of electrical knowledge that I will be leaning on for assistance.

Thanks in advance for all your input!

Hi Bruce,

Here is a link about the type of bike you would be planning:  http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2009/11/08/mavizen-ttx02-an-electric-race-bike-you-can-buy/

Since you are new at this, I would set your goal on a bike with less top speed. For ideas, I would start looking at the race bikes from the TTXGP racing series.

Thanks for the info and link Phantom. I am a bit confused, because don't the TTXGP bikes go 130+ MPH, but the average speed of the course is like 85 or so? I do not think my goal is unattainable, I just need to make sure I am using the correct equipment. Maybe my new goal is to build a bike that can compete with the TTXGP bikes. I do have some questions though - first, reading through some of the posts on the site I am getting the you need high Voltage to go faster (or have a higher top speed) and the higher Amps you use the better the torque. Are those correct assumptions to make.

After work today I am going to buy the book by Carl Vogel about Building an Electric Motorcycle, so I am sure that a lot of my questions will be answered through reading that. But I do appreciate all/any assistance I can get from people who are building thier own bikes currently.

Thanks again!

Yes, my links were for race bikes, but it is my opinion that you should try to build something less ambitious at first. Sorry for the confusion. Yes, it is my understanding that you want higher voltage for speed and that you want high amps for more torque.  I am also new at this.

I have that book and it is a good resource.

how many of the M1 motors are you planning on using? cos i doubt just one would give enough power to hit 130mph. I agree with phantom, make a commuter bike and all that you will learn doing so will ensure any race bike you make will be up to scratch.

I couldn't agree more. One M1 motor isn't likely going to be enough.... you're going to need a more powerful motor to hit 130+.... and from what I know, not many bikes even hit the 130mph mark.... mainly due to limitations of battery and motor power.... which is because there's just not that much room on a bike. Start looking at BLDC motors like Remy, UQM, Calmotors etc. You need a power dense motor, AC Induction motors give a good amount of power, but you really need something that doesn't have to generate its own magnetic flux in the rotor.

and forget lifepo4, you're going to need something more energy and power dense, like Kokam (LiPo). Even the most dense lifepo4 won't cut it. You need to keep weight down, go lipo and prepare to spend some money doing it.

Sounds like you're coming from the gas world and see that electric bikes are cool, but don't have much of an idea of energy/power or the technology.... this isn't something you just choose some off the shelf stuff and throw it in a bike, its really a long term design project where you'll spend a good amount of money, lots of testing and a good amount of trial and error.

Even the Motoczysz bike, with 12.5kwh and a high power motor, couldn't do 40-50 miles on a track (they did a little over 37 around IOM and had 10% battery left) , and they reached 135-140mph as a top speed on the straights. It had a BLDC motor with Lipo in it.

and thats one sweet bike too, not sure of build cost, but I would guess upwards of 100k. Also, it runs an oil cooled motor inside the swingarm, so I'm assuming that isn't available off the shelf!

sweeeeeeeet, that ain't too much in racing terms either. Hell, if I had that sorta cash lying around It'd be bloody tempting to put on a road bike just so I could go out and own some petrolheads :P
