Help Understand my 3.3kw charger my Zero S
« on: December 08, 2022, 06:40:22 AM »

Hi All,

I need smart minds than myself to help me understand this. I bought a J1772 to Nema 5-20 adaptor, and I was using it to charger my Zero S 2022 while on the road. It was only level 1 speeds of course so I wanted to boost it up. I created a connector so I can use the brown port and ordered a 3.3kw charger. I just got the charger but the power connector on the end is a standard US 3 prong plug (NEMA 5-15) can this handle 3300 watts? The cabling is only 14AWG which is 15 Amps.

I want to be able to charge with my stock charger and my aftermarket at the same time to get up to 4.6kw. So if I connect the aftermarket charger and my stock charger to a Y splitter I would pull 13.75 AMPS with the 3.3kw charger and 5.4 with my stock charger so 19AMPS.

It just seems strange to put a 120v plug on the end of a charger that wants to be connected to 240v.

I use 120 VAC plugs with 240 VAC with no issues at all. I charge my Zero DS up to 7.9 KW on the road and all these plugs are designed for 120 VAC but used with 240 VAC.

Even the stock inlet on the older Zeros for the OBC are designed for 120 VAC, but I always charge my bikes with 240 VAC. I only use 120 VAC when I have no choice which isn't often. In the case of the OBC, 240 VAC has to be even safer because it's half the current when 240 VAC is used.

The cabling is only 14AWG which is 15 Amps.
240 VAC times 15 amps is 3,600 watts, so you're okay there with a 3.3 KW charger.
