Top case installed on Ribelle
« on: August 08, 2022, 02:52:12 AM »

I picked up my bike today after getting a custom frame made to mount a Givi Monokey rack. Many thanks to @flynnstig82r for the tip about Sonic Moto in Oakland, CA (from a Reddit post).

I’m looking forward to trying it out in tomorrow’s commute.

Here are the obligatory pics (sorry for just the links…I’m sharing them from my Dropbox account. Not sure how else to include the pics since they’re too big to attach):

So that was your Ribelle I saw when I was there! Nice choice of WL901 for the top case. I just got some WL900’s to replace my high-drag Trekker 33 side cases, and I’m itching to try them out.

That setup is very nice!

Did Sonic Moto express any interest in kitting this for others?

When I saw the WL901 from Givi I knew it was time to get serious about figuring out a way to mount a top case. The light weight and design complemented the OEM side cases well enough for me. Your tip on Reddit was the icing on the cake.

Todd at Sonic Moto said he made a few additional frame kits for the Ribelle since they required longer arms due to differences between the EsseEsse9 and the Ribelle sub frames. Feel free to reach out to him. He’s pretty excited about the opportunity to fill this need for Energica owners.

Does it wheelie better with all that weight in back?

LOL...probably but I'm too much of a wuss to try. ;) The top case is a Givi WL901 and it weighs about half of what their usual top cases weigh. I think it's like 5 pounds for the case and the rack is their plastic/polymer rack so it's pretty light as well. I didn't ask Todd at Sonic Moto what the frame itself weighs but I suspect it's a hollow box construction and therefore relatively light for what it is. I'll have to ask him the next time I talk to him. He's fully aware of trying to keep the load on our Energicas light so I'm confident it doesn't add any detrimental weight beyond what my already hefty girth does.  :P

Looks good, does your boot hit case when you swing a leg over the bike to get on and off?

Yeah, I'm having to re-learn how to mount a sporty bike with a top case. Same skill I had to learn on my Triumph Trophy and Kawasaki Concours 14 when I had them.

If you commute on your bike, I highly recommend a top case or at least a tail bag. Especially if you can filter through traffic (California, USA or Europe/Asia). Like I mentioned, the Givi WL901 is a very light weight case and complements the OEM side cases well. Again, I wouldn't recommend keeping anything of value in any of the cases unless you can park the bike in a secure location. Being rigid soft cases, all it takes is a decent pocket knife to slice them open.
