Zero FX motor changes over the years
« on: August 08, 2022, 11:08:32 PM »

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know how the motor characteristics have changed over the years for the Zero FX? And have there been any issues with the motor's overall life?

I don't think it really has changed. Did they make the 75-5 IPM in 2015 along with the 75-7? That would be the only major difference. Either way I'm going to reach out to ask a friend who knows more.

The FXS switched to IPM in 2016, the FX and smaller battery S/DS switched in 2017

Got an answer from the person who knows everything:

"The shaft changed from 1" with a key, to the 'zero spline' in 2017 when we moved to the 11mm pitch belt, and I think in 2021 the spline changed slightly to a standard 30degree pressure angle (a little elbow grease and file can make the zero spline and 30deg spline work compatibly. We have a Dyno coupler that fits either type of spline). Also in 2017 our sevcon Gen4 controllers got more current, so the motor produced more torque, but that had nothing to do with an actual motor change."
