FXS Elcon 1.8kw Charger Setup
« on: April 17, 2022, 10:43:25 PM »

Wanted to share my external charger set up with you all for those who might be interested in doing the same. Ordered my Elcon from Elcon Chargers in Sacramento and had a very easy experience with that. Found the Apache 2800 case at Harbor Freight and for my mounting I wanted to make sure the charger was supported by the rear seat but stabilized by the rack rails. The bungees hold it tight to the seat and I have a looped velcro strap holding the handle of the case to the rear rack plate so the case can not wander from to back to front. Did the maiden voyage yesterday and with the exception of almost tipping over at a stop light it went really well.  :)

With the Elcon and stock charger its 2.5 hrs for a full charge. The Elcon by itself on 110 is still a tad quicker than the stock charger so it helps out in any situation really.

Having extra charging on an FXS sure is nice. When you get tired of messing with so many cables you can mount the J Plug inlet and semi permanently hard wire the accessory charger.

I read through your post staples and it helped give me a lot of ideas actually! I flirted with the idea of making something more permanent but currently I dont need the elcon for the far majority of my FXS rides. My Tuono does the longer distance stuff (they are perfect opposites by the way). We will see if this changes now that I have the capacity to ride further and charge up faster though!

I'd be happy if someone just made an aftermarket charger that fit the FXS stock charger location above 1000 watts.  Sigh...

I hear you on that valnar!

Another bonus I just discovered is that the onboard and 1.8@120v pull less than 15amps (12-13) so they can be plugged into the same circuit. Puts out about 1.3k watts.

You can make that rear rack a bit more useful if you get an extension plate for it.   I bought this from Perun Moto and I am able to use my bike to carry boxes up to 50 lbs from our home business to our local UPS store.  I wouldn't necessarily carry that much weight one long, bumpy rides out of fear the OEM rack might not hold up but 20-30 lbs shouldn't be an issue.

My FXS with OEM rack and extension plate:

Also, does Elcon make a charger with greater capacity than 1.8 kW that would work with the FX series bikes and be able to use level 2 charging?   Or is 1.8 kW the largest you can go?

Personally, I would worry about that much weight on the back as I think the rack is only weighted for 10lbs (IIRC but dont quote me).

The 1.8 is the smallest actually. They have a 3.3 and a 6.6kw as well. I wanted the smallest for the lightest weight and I dont typically use the FXS for long trips.

My 3.3 KW elcon works great, should for your FX as well.  Not too heavy and only need to take it when you want to charge fast.  Seen some guys mount it in a box that is QD as well, with the j plug, etc all built in.  Pretty neat stuff!
