Motor Removal Questions (Using the Wiki) - 2015 SR
« on: January 17, 2022, 10:21:02 PM »

Hello! I am removing the motor from my 2015 SR for motor bearings replacement. I have someone lined up to do the bearings and I just need to get the motor out and ship it to him. I am following the Unofficial Zero Service Manual/wiki and have a couple questions.

For Step 3, "Unplug the sensor connector near the front of the controller on the riders right side of the bike."
I'm assuming I need to get under the seat and find this connector. From what I've gathered, I will have to navigate the nest of wires, cut zip ties, and make room by removing the Y bar under the seat and possibly the storage tank for extra room. Does this sound about right?

For Step 4, "Un-bolt the 3 phase leads to the motor controller."  I wish there were pictures for this step, too  :P I'm assuming once I get in and unplug the sensor connector from step 3, the 3-phase leads should be easy to spot, am I correct?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can provide. I am still learning about DIY work on my Zero and excited I got this far  ;D The wiki and Zero community have been super helpful!

For Step 4, "Un-bolt the 3 phase leads to the motor controller."  I wish there were pictures for this step.

These are the thick orange wires that carry power from the controller to the motor. You will need to unbolt them from the controller.

Thanks, guys! After I removed the “Formex” cover under the seat, it was easy to distinguish the 3 phase leads.

As for the sensor connector that the wiki listed being near the right side of the bike, turns out mine was tucked away on the left hand side. What worked for me was following the wire out from the motor as far as I could, then tugging on it as I watched for which cable from atop was moving. Will remove the motor after my extra long 6mm Allen socket arrives in the mail.
