Ohlins Equipped Eva - Nuisance Thunk Sound
« on: July 19, 2021, 09:08:05 AM »

Happens on weight shift when bike is in motion - can't hear it or feel it unless speed is parking lot level.

Went to dealer and they indicated fork stiction and when asked how they know w/o testing bike...upon getting an eye-roll I haven't been back...

Suspect this noise is material strain exhibited by the upper triple-tree clamp - no movement felt by hand at the fork tube interfaces while riding - suspecting this because one fork is controlling compression damping and the other fork controls rebound damping making this Ohlins specific.

Of note - the Ego top triple tree clamp is more robust particularly at the tube interfaces having double the clamping area and retaining bolts.

Clamp bolts are tight not loose, is factory service manual or torque values available?

Seeking list member correlation to same issue.

It's not something that I have ever experienced with Ohlins forks.

Torque spec on upper and lower triple clamps is 15Nm. When torquing the lower make sure you alternate between each bolt till the torque wrench does not rotate before clicking.
If the bike has ever been dropped it is possible the left and right fork tubes have shifted slightly in the clamps, this could cause binding.
Measured stick out of the fork tubes from the upper tree should be identical. Just make sure you take the readings from the same place as the top clamp is cut at an angle.

Also worth checking your preload, compression and rebound settings.

Preload - Use a (15mm?) box end wrench or socket to turn the cap clockwise, count the turns till it bottoms out. Believe factory setting is ~6 total turns. Make a mark on one of the bolt flats for easy reference. Check both L & R tubes.
Compression and Rebound - Using a 3mm allen driver turn each adjuster clockwise till they bottom out (use light pressure when turning). There are detents between the positions count the clicks or the number of rotations. Factory is ~ 6-8 clicks (1.5 - 2 turns).

Nice - thank you!

All check out fine - tube offset is 0.15mm - preload match - all settings are within 2-clicks of factory.

It is rather subtle but defined and difficult to replicate but when it happens it's alway in parking lot speeds, apply brake thing or blurp throttle ever so slightly and suprise what was that?

The forks behave fine with no stiction the steering head feels correct also.

Gonna try and capture it on video by taping recorder hard against handlebar - busy work week will report back and not concerned in the least given handling is fine.
