SR/S rear brake disk bolts came loose
« on: May 19, 2021, 07:30:57 AM »

Riding at 50 to 60 mph and everything running smooth until suddenly the bike started shaking and pulsating with a lot of accompanying noise.

Turned out that the rear brake disk bolts were coming unscrewed and hitting the brake caliper assembly.

One bolt head was torn up and would not screw back in and it had managed to carve a nice deep recessed arc into the brake caliper assembly by the time I got the bike stopped.  I could not stop right away because there was traffic and no place to pull over, safer to continue I thought. I managed to remove offending bolt and slowly drove home.

Back home found all of the remaining brake disk bolts loose by one or two turns and most could be easily turned by hand without using any tools.  Tightened up all the the remaining bolts and rode the bike to dealer who said I would be getting a bunch of new parts under warranty.

This is just a heads up to others to check hardware for security every once in a while.  Pleased to say that the bike handled very well and there was no loss of control even thou the pounding and shaking seemed very hard to me.

Well, that sucks. Someone forgot the thread-lock during assembly.  :(

I am surprised. Everything on my Zeros were very much over-torqued, making every bolt difficult to loosen. Or perhaps they used permeant lock-tite on my bikes. :)

Zero sure tightened up the front axle on my bike. When I tried to remove the front wheel to change my tire I had a hell of a time loosening the axle. It took lots of lube, tapping with a hammer and finally using an electric impact driver to get it loose.  :o

Anyone with an SR/S should check their rotor bolts immediately. Bikes coming off the same manufacturing line tend to have the same manufacturing issues.

A friend who like me has a Super Tenere said people were finding their steering head bolt was loose. Sure enough, mine was loose and backed off by several turns.

There’s actually an recall for this very condition on 2019 SR/F’s. I’d reach out to customer service and see if your bike is affected

Perhaps expanded to 2020 models, if an SR/S was affected?

@Eicas , What is the Manufacture Date of your bike?
(On Label inside the Charge Port Cover)

Sept 20 Mfg Date [21 MY] here.
Fortunately mine appear tight, as the Torque Marks are still aligned.

Good of OP to provide this warning  8)

My bike is at the dealer now and Zero will cover repair cost.  If it helps, it is a 2021 model and had just over 600 miles on it.

Both dealer and Zero seem to be bending over backwards to expedite the repair, I had a positive response the next day.  Dealer now waiting for parts from Zero.
