SR/S-Premium, adding another charger
« on: March 11, 2021, 09:42:33 PM »

6KW to ~9KW...

Without adding a charge tank...because I already have the power tank. Can a third party charger be connected to this bike? Has anyone done it?

I don't see why it cannot be done, if going direct to the battery terminals on the motor controller.

But what country are you in?  In the USA, 9 KW  is probably not worth the hassle as most J1772 stations can only handle around 6.6 KW anyway. But there are times when we can charge at higher rates by using various methods, such as  hogging up two J1772 stations or using a Tesla-Tap from a 12 KW Tesla Destination charger, etc.

I sometimes charge my Zero SR at 8KW on the road or ten KW at home. But not all J-1772 stations here can handle 9 KW or even 8 KW.

I'm in the USA, near Atlanta.

It would be an experiment for sure... I'd soon learn where it works and where it doesn't. My initial plan is to fashion a new plate to fit where the passenger seat is so that I can plug and unplug an additional charger using an Anderson plug and perhaps a couple other plugs to quick connect and disconnect from the main bus. I seldom have a passenger, so it would be on most of the time.

Simply read the current capacity right at the J-1772 station. It's usually listed on the side or back or somewhere. Usually  in current (amps), but sometimes in watts or both.

Then you can know in advance if it is worth it for you to have more than 6.5 or so KW of chargers. Also check if there are 14-50Rs that you can use.  For an example, the two  14-50Rs  on the side of the CourthHouse in Genoa, NV is open to the public and I have charged there a lot. It's shown on Plugshare as well.

Don't forget every time you have to double your chargers to get near twice the charging speed. It is a lot easier to go from 1 KW to 2 KW charging than it is to go from 6 to 12 KW charging yet you will get a larger percentage of gain with going from the 1 to the two (a lot less heat loss). You could be better off with less than 7KW. But first check the specs on your AC charge stations in the area. They are also usually listed on Plugshare.

Interesting idea.

Question is: Where would you want to place the additional 3 kW charger if not in the storage compartment?
