Upgrade 2013 DS Rear Brakes to J-Juan?
« on: March 09, 2021, 11:34:40 PM »

Has anyone upgraded the 2013 DS Rear Brakes (Nissin) to J-Juan?  I just cant get the Nissin to work without stomping on the pedal.  Basically the pedal is rock hard.  Standing on the pedal eventually does the rear brake to work, but only slightly.
Thanks

instead of changing the caliper I would just look for a HH-rated brake pad, such as sold by EBC or another major brake pad manufacturer, that fits the Nissan caliper. Nissan makes good brakes. My guess is that Zero just specified the hardest compound they could find feeling that using both the rear brake together with regen might make the rear tire skid. However, I doubt that would ever happen unless you were riding downhill on a very slippery paved road or a gravel trail.

Mine work fine/pretty good.  Still the original pads after 8 years and 40k miles.
I did replace the brake fluid two years ago though.  That might help yours as well.

They did make a conversion kit to the larger 2014 rotor and brake setup.  AF1 racing may still have some.  I think they were like $300.

I think this is it.  Although it reads 14 to 13 it should be the other way around.  Zero used to sell it directly.

Gee, I pretty much always skid if I use the rear brake suddenly.  I gotta use it so softly!  It's very useful then, kinda like a throttle limit.

But I have no idea what's on mine other than 'slightly warped'.

I think model years 2013 and 2014 were the only years that Zero used Nissan brake components. After that they switched to J.Juan.

Oddly, the 2012 models used Hayes brake components, which I had never heard of before. I wasn't impressed with their braking performance, but things must have improved since then as BMW started using them on some of their motorcycles last year and apparently they work about as well as Brembo, according to some BMW reviews that I have read.

I have Hayes on my bicycle.

And my bike has random 2015 parts on it (like the mirrors) so no idea.  The rear brake stops real well, is all I know.

If it were my bike I would,

Remove rear caliper (not the line, just the mount)
remove the pads
clean the caliper especially around the piston area
carefully pump the pedal to move the pistons out a little bit
clean area again
using a c-clamp, press the pistons back into the caliper
push pedal again to ensure the pistons are moving freely
push piston back in with clamp
take stock pads, look at them, then throw in the trash
replace with high quality pads EBC or similar
reinstall caliper and pump the pedal to seat pads
check fluid level

Once the pads break in you should feel a vast improvement in braking performance.
