Zero FX 2013/2014 software controller problems
« on: January 19, 2021, 10:07:44 PM »

A couple of years ago I purchased  a second hand 2014 Zero FX motorcycle .
I love that bike plenty ,  but ....
The  motorcycle software ,controller  ( I assume ) sometimes cuts the motor out complete,  even whilst I am riding at constant speed .
Mostly I tend to fix it by switching the bike off and on again , but sometimes it takes a bit more pushing backwards and forwards before it wants to go live again .
Anybody out their with a similar problem ?

Hey
Sounds like problem that i had a couple of years ago, tell me if its acting the same:
You riding and and just lose any power from the motor, the dash, light, 12v so on.. stay the same, just the motor "turn off"
Then you need to recycle (switch off and on the bike),
If that sound like your problem, I think you have one of the battery's that doing some problem
and there is kind of easy fix for that.. let me know..
If everything shut down, or "restart" its might be the switch that doing some problems..
But the most impotent try to download the logs for the motorcycle and to battery's and to read it with reader..
I had many problems with my Zero FX 14, lucky I am playing with electronics most of my life, so have touch for that.
Please Ride safe, its dangerous to ride like that at public road...

(by the way i think this Q should be at the proper place, so others can learn from that)

My first Zero, a 2012 S, had a couple of problems with power interruptions. When new sometimes while waiting at a stop light and then trying to take off the bike wouldn't move unless I rebooted the ignition. (No fun with car drivers behind you.) That problem was solved at the factory by replacing the throttle assembly. Then a few months later the "glitch" would occasionally rear its ugly head and shut down power while traveling on the highway. This apparently had something to do with the encoders and the controller going out of sinc.  That was solved by a formal recall and a firmware update. Of course, the 2014 models are completely different machines with different motors, batteries and maybe controllers, too.

Sounds like downloading the logs and battery logs is the first step to solving this problem .
interesting  how the problem sounds so familiar to the recal problem of the 2012/2013 , although you say the 2014 is a complete different machine .

Actually, the 2013 models were completely different machines. The 2012 bikes were a big improvement over the 2010 and 2011 models, but they only lasted one year. They used EIG (I think that was the name) batteries and an off-the-shelf open shell brushless electric motor.  The 2013 bikes switched to Farsis batteries and a Zero-designed enclosed motor. The 2012 S and DS models were all recalled by the factory due to a tendency to burn up while being charged.   :o

I managed to download the riding logs for my bike as per attachment.
I am struggling to download the battery logs .
Everytime I start the battery log download it seems to freeze up at 33 % download .
I tried to read the riding logs , but I am not to sure what I should be looking for with regards to sorting or identifying  out the defect .

This log above  is the one when my zero bike that was unwilling to operate at all on the 2021/01/30.
Who would be able to identify from the log what the problem in question is ?

Regards Steven

On a normal day my bike would run , but on the 2021-01-30 it did not manage and it was unwilling to move at all .
Motor making a funny humming sound and unwilling to propell me forward .
And tomorrow the issue would be gone again and drive like a normal electric bike without issue

It's easier to pick out errors that are problems when you have a base line log from a day it works normally.

Ok .
That makes sense .
I will try to download the logs on a normal day and then compare the 2 logs
