I haven't been riding my FXS on the street much lately, but wondering if could make it a bit more dirt worthy and take it on some single track dirt trails.

I guess I could just add knobby tires to it, but wondered about 21/18 inch wheels and maybe a chain kit.

Has anyone looked into this or gone this route?

I would be concerned about clearance with the 21" up front, but you could at least run the 19" off the DS as they have the same fork. Not sure about the rear, I would think the swingarm is the same across all models so either they all have clearance for an 18" or the FX has a longer belt to move the wheel backwards.

Stock tires are:

110/70-17
140/70-17

TKC80's come in:

120/70-17
140/80-17

Wondering if there is any issue with the size changes.

I went the opposite - FX -> FXS and occasionally swap the FX wheels back on for fun off road.

The rear FX wheels will bolt on but you'll have to figure out something for the front brake caliper / rotor.

Also the forks on the FXS are ~1" shorter

I spoke with AF1 Racing yesterday.

They said it was about $1,000 to add a Chain Kit and knobby tires to the FXS.

Also said it was about $3,700 to convert FXS to FX. 

I might give the first option a try next year.

$3700 is insane.. the whole BOM is around $2300 even if you buy the FX forks. Maybe that includes labor?

I totalled it up to $2500 for the forks, shock, longer kickstand, front and rear wheels (assuming $300 each), front and rear tyres (assuming $150 each), and the front brake rotor. Not sure if the brake lines would need to be changed but if so that's $260 and if that includes the chain kit that's an extra $325 for a total of nearly $3100. If it really would include all that $600 for labour and other little bits sounds reasonable considering how much work would be involved.

It might be better just to buy the FX.

Seems like the cheapest, easiest, and simplest option is to sell or trade-in your FXS and just buy an FX. That's a lot of hassle and money to convert something when a specialty made version of it for what you want already exists.

No the easiest thing would have been to keep the one he sold.
