Hand guards for the SS9?
« on: October 05, 2020, 04:23:12 AM »

Bark busters or similar for the SS9?
To keep hands warmer in colder weather, and provide some brake lever protection.
The right side handlebar inside has a flange about 4 cm in. Not sure what that is about, but I can say it limits the length of an insert.

STM-005-02-BK - This model of Barkbusters won't work out-of-the-box.

I just opened a set.

The flange is a limiting factor -but- if the insert is shortened by approx 3/4" (19cm), once shortened, lengthen the flutes, it should work.

I saw a set of these on a Zero - I'm told they've held up well the past 3 years -and- work well in winter.

Yes, I like the barkbusters storm  hand guards on my Zero DS, but they definitely don't fit the handle bars on my Eva.  You might be able to get them to work with this fit kit:  https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/barkbusters-bar-end-mounting-kit-18mm-plastic-insert?sku_id=899169

The inside diameter of my SS9 handlebars measures 16.6mm. Which means an 18mm insert would be too large anyway.
Bark busters also makes a 14, which would be too small.
I could file the plastic insert down, but the metal would be harder to do right.
The plastic is no longer available, at least not from Revzilla.
Suggestions?

Suggestions?

McMaster Carr p/n 86435K121 (or similar) Silicone Rubber Sheet, 0.010 thick

Use 14mm plug but wrap the OD of insert w/ trimmed piece of rubber sheet to build up OD

I am confused by why the 14mm insert would not work?

Just for reference this is the insert you have as part of your kit?

Looking at the parts of the kit on the webpage and the install video they work with a variety of different bar IDs.
When tightened the little threaded piece pulls back expanding the metal insert to the ID of the bars.

The only reason I can see for the flange is to prevent the hardware used to secure bar ends from slipping too far into the bars. I can take a look tomorrow to see if it would be possible to drill this out to provide the required depth for inserts.

Yep, that is too long Demoni...I tried on my Eva with an extra set that I had on hand.  There's a step inside the Eva bars that is problematic.  You might be able to shorten the insert or maybe add a spacer outside the bar (barkbusters includes such a spacer in their kit for the Storm).

barkbusters makes a shorter insert that solves the too long problem but doesn't match the handlebar size. They come in 14 and 18mm. The bars are 16.6mm. Per a suggestion above, I wrapped some rubber sheet around the 14. Clever idea, but did not work. The end of the 14 is the part that expands, so with only a narrow expanding ring next to the expander bold, not enough area to keep the barkbusters from drooping.

Something less compressible than rubber sheeting perhaps?

Energica sells expensive bar ends as an option for the SS9+. I don't know what the internals look like. Perhaps that might provide a solution?

I have woodcraft bar end sliders on my Eva...they've just got an M6? bolt/nut squeezing a 5/8" cylinder of rubber inside the bar and it's fairly solid.  Maybe you could just try replacing the metal sleeve on the barkbusters assembly with a rubber stopper from the hardware store (#2 has a diameter of 15mm-19mm) with a hole drilled in the center to accommodate the bolt?

Worth a try, but likely will be the same as the rubber sheet. Retaining a bar end takes less grip than resisting the torque of hand guards. I could go full on barkbusters, which also attach to the bars medial to the grips, but the storms are simpler - and I already have them.

...but doesn't match the handlebar size. They come in 14 and 18mm. The bars are 16.6mm.

The kit comes with 14mm inserts that expand to fit many sizes of bars.
This quote is directly from Barkbusters "Fits any hollow-tube 7/8" diameter handlebars using a single-sided attachment point at the bar end."

This is exactly the same way the factory option bar ends attach to the bikes. The rubber has some flex to it that is fine with bar ends. Rubber used as a mounting method for handguards would cause them to wobble like crazy, this is why they use the metal ones.
