Hi gents,

Looking at a used 2018 FXS, just wondering what re the differences phsically other than colour between this and a 2020 model, like software updates common issues and the like? my only worry is there is no warranty on it other than the battery so just wondering.

Apparently the 2020 models have the same version of the Cypher operating system as the SR/F (III?) and can use the same "Next Gen" app, although I haven't read of anyone confirming this nor do I know if there's even a practical benefit to it. Other than that I'm pretty sure they should be identical in terms of function, certain parts may have slight revisions but things like that can happen even within the same model year.

Now Zero is announcing that all of its 2020 models will feature the updated app, bringing an upgraded level of connectivity to all bikes in Zero’s lineup.

According to Zero:

Complementing the powerful Cypher operating systems, every 2020 Zero Motorcycle will possess an updated Next Gen App that provides effortless connection to a motorcycle’s custom ride modes, charging status, updates, and diagnostics.

That's an interesting change. Might also add the updated dashboard and traction control than and some other things that are available on the SR platform.

I don't have much experience with their previous dashboards but biggest difference with the new system must be the connectivity and that is only accessible for free the first 2 years of ownership. Something to take into account. Don't even think the pricing after that period has been announced just yet.

If money if a big concern for you, and if the model you are looking at is in good repair (esp the battery - check the battery logs), then a used model might be a good value for money.

I must admit it was intially but with the newer models coming in at 11KW it means it saves having to do another motorcyle license here in the UK which would cost and additonal £1000.

i think im going to wait for the 2021 model hopefully we will have imporvments as i know they arnt far away.

I also got an 11kW model (don't worry, they're no slower than the unrestricted models except for the top speed is limited to 86 instead of 98) as I'm on L's. I was also looking at used models but they only started making the 11kW ones in 2019 (2020 for the FX and FXS) so that 2018 FXS would require at least an A2 licence. I ended up with an ex-demo (just over 100 miles) 2019 7.2 DS for £8.5k. This was in November so it would be a good idea to wait at least until then as that'll be around when dealers start getting rid of their demo bikes (they said they have to even though the 2020s aren't really any different). Around the same time will be when the 2021 models, and any changes they may have, will be announced.

All the dealers I spoke to about getting a 2020 model said it would be January at the earliest that I could get one, even though they had been available to order for a couple months that's just how long it takes for them to get shipped over and then registered.

The only insurance company I found that had the 11kW models listed to get quotes on was Lexham, think it's around £500-600 per year (not including extras like leather and helmet cover, medical cover, legal cover) and only something like £100-150 more than it cost me for my 125 the previous year. That's with 1 years NCB, they did me a massive favour and let me take out the policy a few weeks before the year was up and then retroactively applied the discount once I had the details from my old insurer so I highly recommend them.
