Corbin saddle on 2018 S
« on: July 21, 2020, 10:16:40 PM »

Photos later when I get a chance to take it for a ride.  I had only one issue with the installation and it's PROBABLY not one you'd have to deal with.

When I had the Charge Tank installed last year, I lost the handy storage compartment in the faux tank, so to make up for the lost space I bought a small Tourmaster tank bag that has worked out perfectly so far.  There are two straps "permanently" mounted to the bike and the bag uses the ubiquitous Fastex buckles to secure in place.  The front strap wraps around the steering neck, and the rear strap is wrapped around the frame rail under the saddle.

It is that latter strap that caused the difficulty.  The stock seat pan doesn't hug the frame that tightly so replacing the seat after attaching the strap was easy.  The Corbin base pan, however, doesn't have any clearance at all beneath it.  I had to exert considerable pressure on the rear of the saddle in order to get the bolt holes to line up properly.

I'm only hoping that in time the Corbin base pan will "break in" and make it less difficult to remove and reinstall the saddle.

Looks great. As they've got rid of the pillion seat it would be cool if they added a storage compartment in the rear.

There actually IS a pillion seat... that silver area is padded vinyl designed to LOOK like a tail cone.  Corbin recommends that it is only good for short rides with a passenger though.

First impressions:  It is just as firm as the stock saddle BUT with a better shape that doesn't seem to have any noticeable pressure points.  The design allows me to slide my butt farther back which puts my legs in a more comfortable knee bend.  It also lowers my torso slightly which is probably good for reducing wind resistance.

I only took it for a short ride so far.  Once I get some more miles on it I'll be able to say more.

Looks good! Lowering the torso could be helpful for tucking in too. Possibly will make it more useful for adding clip on s too (due to reduced pressure points)

When I had a Corbin, my partner actually wound up liking the pillion area better than stock.

On the other hand (after a total accident and new DSR), I had a custom seat made from my latest Zero pan, and had the rider/passenger area made to my liking which seems to be fine as well.

The Corbin gunfighter design is rider-centric, for sure, focusing on letting the rider scoot back and lean forward for a little more help with an aerodynamic crouch or tuck.

Okay, I've only come up with ONE thing about the Corbin that has been annoying me lately and it's something I need to figure out for myself.  For YEARS I've gotten into a habit that I'm finding very difficult to break.  Basically, it's this:  I store my gloves inside my helmet when I'm not wearing either.

On every bike I've ever owned, my "mounting" ritual goes like this:
1) Key in the ignition, unlock the fork (don't start it yet).
2) Take the gloves out of the helmet, lay them on the pillion saddle.
3) Put on the helmet, secure the neck strap, zip up the jacket.
4) Put on the gloves, throw my leg over the saddle, turn the key to the "ON" position
5) Raise the bike off the sidestand, kick the sidestand up, push the starter button (not necessary on the Zero)
6) Ride off.

Thanks to the shape of this new Corbin saddle, however, I have to add step:
3A) Bend over, pick the gloves off of the ground as they slid off the saddle

Eventually I'll get the hang of this...

I put my gloves on the tank, can even tuck them under the bars a little for a bit more security if it's windy out.

I tried that originally but the tank tops are usually too slippery.  Not a problem back when motorcycles had centerstands but now most of them do not and the Zero leans quite a bit on the sidestand.  HOWEVER, now that I have a tankbag on it, that may be a better solution.

Do you have a PT or CT? The dip in the lid of my regular tank seems to hold them quite well. Could be that my gloves are "stickier" too being leather, some textile gloves would slide more easily I imagine.

You could put the gloves atop the key/instrument panel, too.

Well, not QUITE a 200 mile day yesterday (only 194) but I'm convinced:  My butt wasn't nearly as sore at the end of the day as it was when I did do over 200 miles on the stock seat.  Probably a couple of things contribute to that (in no particular order):
1) My butt is FINALLY toughening up after so long a period without any long rides
2) The leather cover on the Corbin breathes better than the vinyl cover on the stock seat
3) The Corbin has a better overall shape than the stock seat.
