time to balance the battery
« on: August 19, 2022, 05:28:02 AM »

Hi Everyone,

just want to share my observation and check if others have the same.

I had an imbalance of 50mV after 4 months of never charging to 100% so I went ahead and plugged the charger in and let it balance. It took 4 days to get the balance back to 2mV. I was checking it every day and saw that it reduced roughly 12mV each day. (FXS 7.2 long brick Year 2020)

Thanks in advance for your insight.

My 2016 DSR had its battery replaced last July (14.4) & it now has 16k miles & shows 15 charge cycles but only about 1/3 of those were to 100%.
In an attempt to maximize the health/life of the new battery I installed a spring wound 0-4hr & an electronic 3hr timer along with a toggle switch so I’m able to charge from 0-7hr or continually.
I use 70% as a charge target & figure 60min./10% SOC
I just checked my cell imbalance & its 2mv so in my case, active cell balance hasn’t been an issue.

Does Zero balance the cells only when fully charged or at any point?
I very rarely fully charge my bike, but my cell balance is consistently at 5-10mV.

my understanding is that it balances only at full charge when the charger is connected. Usually I also have between 5-12mV. In my case regen braking seems to increase the imbalance.

How do you measure imbalance?

Battery balance is shown in the app on the battery tab for example.

Unless you have a gen3 bike, in which case you are out of luck since Zero decided this was no longer important information to provide in the app.

So, for the Gen 3's, is it safe just to leave it charging for days at a time in the hopes that it'll shut itself off when the balancing is complete?  My SR/S has shut off just once or twice on its own after reaching 100%.  Is it recommended to leave it on the charger until this happens every so often?  Monthly?

So to balance you just leave charger plugged in, don't have to anything else but monitor
