Title: 2016 DS, belt issue or motor issue?
Post by: motorrad36 on February 23, 2020, 12:47:10 AM
I have been noticing a squeal on my DS, and it mostly comes in sport mode. It’s very noticeable at low speed and sounds like an alternator belt going bad at 20mph+. I was thinking it just needed to be adjusted. But the sound almost goes away entirely in eco mode. I asked my local shop and the foreman thought it may be the motor going bad. I’ll post a YouTube link shortly so you can hear the sound.

Edit: here’s the YouTube link:  https://youtu.be/dM4pHt-SSBY (https://youtu.be/dM4pHt-SSBY)

Sound I’m concerned with is best heard around 1:35. Apologies for so much wind noise!

The honk?  Or the whine?

I’m going to do another video in the early morning when it’s cooler. It’s much more noticeable then.

I can’t clearly here any noise other then the sound of wind.
What have you been tensioning the belt too?

Yeah I didn’t think it would be that bad but I was wrong. I haven’t touched the belt tension since I bought it, so it could be a bit off.

Can't hear it clearly... in your video sometimes I hear something like a high pitch whine noise, which mine does too, and the bike is new... is that?

Do you notice any other symptoms? Lose of acceleration or top speed? belt jumps or slippery?

Here is a much clearer version  https://youtu.be/C8xGVsHjt5c (https://youtu.be/C8xGVsHjt5c)

No other symptoms though. It’s a 2016 so not brand new.

All I hear is the normal whining noise, the harder you accelerate the louder it is so it'd make sense that it's more noticeable in sport mode although mine will do it in eco mode too. Mine is a newer model so perhaps the wider belt on it has something to do with it, or it has more torque in eco mode.

I'd say check tension and bearings maybe?

Actually, listening to it again I hear the squeal, most noticeable at the end when you let off the throttle as you don't have the belt/motor whine over the top of it. It really does sound like my dad's worn alternator belt (could be bearings in the alternator I guess) in his car, a rhythmic pulsating sort of sound.

Yes, I can hear it clearly now... I don't have such a sound in mine (dsr 2020), and I am no expert with this kind of sounds so I better let the experts comment, sorry about that :(

That sort of squeal sounds very like the kind of squeal you get when there's dust on a fanbelt.

Cas :)

I haven’t touched the belt tension since I bought it, so it could be a bit off.

I check my 16 DSR belt (condition & tension) the 1st of each month (but I travel 14k+ miles/year).

If I’m not mistaken, the tension can increase on its own so maintaining it is important.

I recommend using a Kriket https://www.amazon.com/Gates-91107-Belt-Tension-Tester/dp/B000MUTAGS

and maintain a 20-30kg tension.
