This year Zero finally brought us LED turn signals and I remember having read that they could be mounted without using resistors if the appropriate parameter(s) is modified in the settings of the bike's firmware, to be done by a Zero dealer.
- Can anyone confirm that resistors aren't needed with these (10-08284-1/2)?
- Can aftermarket LEDs also take advantage of that same firmware tweak?
I am asking that because, the other day, I almost burned my hand while re-routing the cables and those resistors. I had just checked that everything was still working by flashing all four signals for a few seconds. Even if the energy loss is not significant for an EV, the idea of having this heat being produced for nothing each time I use the turn signals bothers me. I can't wait to cut those resistors away.
[Update as of October 22nd]
See the answer from karlh below --> https://www.electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=10526.msg97661#msg97661
The parameter to use is accessory_configuration and it has to be set to 0x36

Added resistors emulate the resistance of incandescent bulb elements, so the relay will see the same load and operate normally. If you can locate a relay, it can be replaced by one that is expecting an LED fixture (that is how it is done for Gen2 S/DS/FX - I don't know about Gen3?)
-
Gen3 bikes do not have a relay, all switching is done inside the MBB.
You do not need resistors for Zero's LED turn signals. If you can find a dealer willing to try it with another pair of LED turn signals, the software config change is not hard.
But there is no configuration, so if it doesn't work without resistors with a different pair of turn signals then there's nothing we could do. Zero only claims to support their turn signals.
-
Thank you Shadow, I was indeed expecting a more modern implementation since I cannot hear that typical relay clicking noise on this bike.
Thank you Auriga, much appreciated and that makes sense. I will check with my dealer and report back here. It might be in a while though, I am not sure if my dealer has gotten the required software tool yet, and also when I will be able to drive the 90 km to get to them.
-
It uses the same tools they use for all Zero bikes, so they'll have it. They might need to ask Zero for instructions if they've never done it before though.

Today I ordered two pair of Weiser Technik LED turn signals for my 2020 SR/S (front and rear). I previously put a pair on the rear of my BMW R1200ST and have had no problems with fault codes. The folks at Weiser advised me to make sure I had the latest firmware update, which I did before taking delivery of my bike two weeks ago. I'll report back when They're installed.

A couple of quick things about these Weiser LED:
Last summer I bought a set of 4 and during the warm months they worked just fine.
As soon as the fall weather came, they started acting up and wouldn't work properly.
On warm days they worked fine and on cold days they would not, (here in North Carolina the fall gives you plenty of swing temperatures)
Read about the resistor on this forum and installed them.
They have worked perfectly ever since, even on the coldest days.
Not sure what resistance value I selected but they only get mildly warm after being on for at least a minute or more. Never got close to hot even after being on for a couple of minutes at the time.
I tested carefully as I didn't want the resistors to get hot and burn and have to install new ones. Hate doing the same work twice!
I selected a high value to prevent exactly that: overheating due to the resistance being too low, and it just happened I got lucky.
It appears it does not take a big increase in the load to make it work right.
Granted these LEDs maybe updated now as the company was aware of the problem since last summer and Zero may have changed something afterwards on the firmware.

I've had the set on my BMW for over a year now with no problems. I'm in upstate New York and routinely ride into November, with temperatures as low as 28F (heated grips work wonders).

Thanks, that would be interesting knowing. I personally didn't have a good experience with Weiser LED on my SR/F as I had reported here:

In the end I let the dealer install me the same kit (4 x LEDs and resistors) which was already working fine on their demo bike. Considering the heat that these resistors produce, I would guess at least 10 W each, I do wonder how it all could be dissipated by the tiny SMD resistors I have seen on the Weiser LED prints.

Hi everybody, I'm french so excuse my english.
I have a 2020 Sr/f and i my dealer mounted me the Zero Leds kit.
At it was said, no need to add some resistors when you can just update the bike's firmware by the dealer. It's more safe (no hot spot) and if there is any problem in the future it will be under warranty.

The Weisers are probably fine now, if you get the right ones. It was probably just first-year miscommunications.

Wonderfull, now we got it confirmed a second time. I will get in touch with my dealer about this software/firmware change. Many thanks for sharing your experience getdown45.

I hope so but, as you can see from the screenshot I just made on their website, in that case they haven't bothered updating their list with the SR/F and SR/S.

Yeah, good reason to skip them for the F-platform bikes, I guess. Weird that Weiser and Zero didn't work this out last year. They're not even a mile apart.

As promised, I'm reporting back on the installation of Weiser Technik LED turn signals on my 2020 SR/S. When I took delivery of my bike I made sure I had the latest firmware version at that time, version 17. I installed the LEDs but got a high flashing rate and error codes, so I removed them and reinstalled the incandescent bulbs. This week my bike went to my dealer for installation of my Power Tank, so I reinstalled the LEDs and worked with the dealer to make them work properly. The fix is not a firmware update, but a change to the hexadecimal accesory_configuration parameter in the settings portion of the MBB Console (see https://zeromanual.com/wiki/Gen3/MBB_Console). The correct value for my bike, an SR/S Premium, is 0x36. The required values vary depending on charger, heated grips, and LED turn signal installations and can be found in the Zero installation instructions for their own LED turn signals.

That's wonderful, many thanks karlh for that information. Exactly what I have been hoping for.
Regarding Weiser that is unfortunately coming about a year too late for me. I still have all 8 boards, but meanwhile bought and mounted aftermarket LED turn signals. So it would appear that setting 0x36 in the accessory_configuration parameter will disable the checks causing the "Error 19: Blinker Bulb Out Fault". Can't wait to try that once I have removed those utterly silly resistors.

The only downside is that I don't think it can be set unless you are logged in as a dealer or above.

0x36 => "00110110"
0x16 => "00010110"
If you know what I mean.

There are threads on this forum that describe how to use an interface cable and terminal software to connect to earlier Zero models, but I don't believe anyone has tried it with an SR/F or SR/S. I had my accesory_configuration parameter changed at my dealer's shop. They provided the laptop, software and interface cable, and I provided the value to enter.

I tried this with my SRS and (set) command seem to not working. I have the good sheet parameter needed to set the original (led) flasher.

By default, non logged in users do not have permissions for that command. For curiosity's sake I tried it on one of the bikes I have here. The command only worked once I had logged in with the dealer tools.

I finally found a Zero dealer willing to do that change on my SR/F, that is, putting 0x36 in the accessory_configuration parameter (for a SR/F Premium). Instead of simply trying it out, the other dealer was looking for reasons not to do it, and that over several months. Now I have finally removed those pesky resistors.

Benefits of being able to find a better dealer!
