EMCCables ODBLink to USB Cable and CoolTerm
« on: July 24, 2018, 07:34:05 AM »

I have a 2014 Zero S and am looking to access the MBB for diagnostics.  I have the OBDLINK MBB Spy/Diagnostics USB Cable for ZERO Motorcycles ...

https://shop.ecmcables.com/tuning-cables/Zero-Electric-Motorcycle-Tuning-OBDII-to-USB-Cables/Diagnostics-USB-Cable-for-ZERO-Motorcycles

I am using macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, and have installed CoolTerm 1.5.0 (Build 572), using the recommended connections communication settings of 38400 baud, 8-N-1, CR+LF for new line.

I am unable to get any response from the MBB.  Does anyone have this configuration (or similar) working?

Quick update ... It does not look like a stock install of macOC High Sierra will work with CoolTerm and the EMC cable, due to drivers.  However, Serial.app worked well ...

... and does not require any drivers.  This might be a good addition the The Unofficial Zero Manual, at ...

Oh, thank you. CoolTerm is fairly obnoxious to install, anyway, because they make no attempt to sign their binaries for security guidelines.

Just FYI, the unofficial zero manual is a wiki like Wikipedia, where anyone can register and then make edits to pages/articles.

And we don't have obnoxious notability requirements like Wikipedia enforces. The worst that'll happen is I go try to clean up prose and structure later.

Nice find, and thanks for the install notes, I'm sure they'll be useful for MacOSX folks.

I'm guessing this gives you MBB terminal access like the diginow dongle does.

Just ordered one to try with Linux.

I've just noticed the ECMCables vendor now offers two Bluetooth modules:

https://shop.ecmcables.com/wireless-tuning/Zero-Electric-Motorcycle-Tuning-OBDII-to-Wireless-device/Zero-Motorcycle-2013-2016-Tuning-OBDII-to-Bluetooth-Diagnostics-Device
MY2013-MY2016 $57 USD in stock

https://shop.ecmcables.com/wireless-tuning/Zero-Electric-Motorcycle-Tuning-OBDII-to-Wireless-device/Zero-Motorcycle-Tuning-OBDII-to-Bluetooth-Diagnostics-Device
MY2017-MY2018 $75 USD pre-order

What would be the reasoning for the split from model years?  Is the USB cabled version good for MY2013-MY2018 or is there a similar split?

2017+ models lack the tiny accidental 3.3V power supply on one of the pins that was usable on prior years.

It seems that the Bluetooth module they make isn’t reliable in either case, though. The USB module is usable, however.

By the way, when I asked the engineer who makes this, they cited my writing on the unofficial manual has their source material and yet got extremely pissed off when I asked why 2017+ models required a new SKU.

I then went to investigate, but want to make clear that this vendor had poor manners considering what they owed me.

Wow! BrianTRice. Your last 3 statements are quite offensive.

The messaging seems a little muddled.
To get some clarity,
1) Is "the engineer that makes this"  someone at ECMCables.com?
and
2) Which vendor exactly is it that you say had "poor manners" and owed you something?

Given your position within the Zero Community your comments have the ability to influence forum members and guests; negatively, it appears, in this case.

Depending on your response, it may be that you'll be tasked with substantiating your comments so as not to jeopardize your credibility and good standing.

I don't think Brian's post is offensive at all and would like to see him swear more.

I called the vendor for this myself just to ask about the situation and got a lot of anger and insults thrown at me, when I was just wondering out of curiosity what the new model difficulty might entail.

The vendor knew that I wrote the material they sourced to develop their kit, and was hostile anyway.

I then went to test some hypotheses about the power pin carefully after checking with other sources and compiled my findings into the above post.

I do a lot of white box reverse engineering and journalistic checkup on claims, and have had my troubles rewarded repeatedly with condescension and rudeness in various ways.

I assure you, if I use an impolite word, it is downplaying a situation I found unpleasant and uncharitable. I very much dislike working in this electric motorcycle space, and look forward to not having to negotiate relationships with highly sensitive vendors with fragile egos in order to learn what’s in my vehicle and how to operate and maintain it.

Did you know that "Whiney BT Rice" is an anagram for "Bitchy Weiner"?

May I recommend that you reconsider posting this way? There’s nothing relevant to you here, and I’m just relaying what politics I have to play to maintain lines of communication.

Zero tolerance for personal attacks. This is a technical forum. Not amused with the lack of respect for valued contributors trying to offer help. Unlocking topic and leaving that rude post as-is for context.
