Toyota says solid state batteries with 2x the range and charging in minutes should be ready by 2022.

One year ago there was in Europe a TV ad about Toy's range of hybrids (non-plugin). This ad was mainly EV-bashing like "low range", "no charging stations" etc, concluding with the hybrids being EV's which recharge themselves while driving, plugless. Terribly stupid. They aim at the wrong target, EV's instead of petrol cars. Or they realize that EV's are rising and Toy has nothing but gasoline-fired pseudo-EV's.

So, will their solid state battery also recharge by itself?

Dont for get Hydrogen cars have always been 5 years away, Looks like Toyota has failed on that one too and given up.
EV is the best energy efficent choice unless your trying to sell Hydrocarbon Fuels or ICE cars. Then you sell FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt)

The way things are going right now it is looking like the 90%-finished H2 station in Sky Londa, across from Alice's Restaurant, might be five years away from being open so that anyone driving a Toyota H2 car can fill up and go for a ride in the woods.  ::)

I think hydrogen just to fit the old "fuel tank" model that the car companies were used to.  It takes electricity to produce the hydrogen at a station anyway so why risk a big boom when you can just charge.
I thought the Toyota story was a pretty big for them.  Unlike Elon who makes bold predictions all the time about what he's doing right around the corner, Toyota is about as low key and conservative as car companies come.  Luke talked about this tech years ago so if they feel it's worth talking about it for EVs even in five years that's pretty encouraging to me.

Yes the big battery breakthrough has been promised for decades but to me it's not EVs that are the research motivaider its all the smart toys.  The big ev batteries will just be a trickle down benefit from phones and tablets that people want to last 24 hours nonstop.  Hell Teslas just use  a ton of Panasonic laptop 18650 cells.  Plus I would love for them to do five year real world use, charging, and cycle life studies  to find the weak points before I jump in.
I just wish I were younger to enjoy all of this longer.

five years?

Most EV's are sold today with a battery warranty of 5 or 7 or 8 years. This means the maker is confident the battery will last beyond that duration.

EV technology is still in its infancy but at my age I don't have enough time left to wait for perfection :(

Hubert, some of the comments were about being bummed to have to wait five years for this tech to be ready for mass production.  All I was saying was I can wait if it means they work all the bugs out.
For me the Lipo batteries light weight improvement isn't good enough to over come the shortened cycle life and fragile nature that comes with it compared to Li ion. (if your not flying them)  The 2x range and fast charging sounds great but what do I have to give up? (nothing I hope)

Here where i live (DK) we can fill up the Toyota H2 car at a station some 25km away.
