2016 Zero DSR Auxiliary Lighting/Questions
« on: June 05, 2017, 09:38:23 PM »

Hi All
I'm in the planing stage of adding additional lighting on my new (to me) 16.

I will make these mods in stages.

1st up is a LED main & running bulb.
http://stores.advmonster.com/h4-r3-led-headlight/

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MUF1APW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are straight forward so no questions here.

However, I want to install these  http://stores.advmonster.com/f11-fog-light-pair/
on the forks as low as possible.

I believe the clamp size I'm looking for is 54mm for the top (just under lower clamps), 49mm down by the reflectors (tube is tapered here), or 59mm at the very bottom (long reach for wiring but perhaps the best location for a fog light?).

I'm sure that these clamps will work up by the bottom fork clamps but are a bit pricy.
https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/denali-inverted-fork-tube-auxiliary-light-mount-for-50-60mm-diameter-tubes

I'm wondering if anyone else has installed clamps to their forks (where & how)?

Other clamp options I have found may not work as have a thicker body or the clamping flange might protrude out to far & interfere with the fender?
http://stores.advmonster.com/heavy-duty-clamp-mount-pair/

This MIGHT work but 48-55mm currently un-available  http://stores.advmonster.com/fork-clamp-mount-pair/

These are beefy but more get have to thick of a side wall http://www.morris4x4center.com/rough-country-led-light-1-65-2-adjustable-mounting-clamps-rc-70171.html?gclid=CKfqsuqAp9QCFYaCfgodHq4Pgg

I plan on wiring the fog light directly to the low beem as the total draw will be less then the stock incandescent & with a 15° spot, oncoming traffic should not be impacted.

Later on I may add additional lights depending on the outcome of the first phase.
So when choosing a clamp, I'm looking for possible expandability (the mounting of a second light).

Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Some previous running light fitments have been documented, at least:

running bulb.

Way over kill in my opinion.  A running light isn't going to help you see the road especially after you put on the fog lights and it won't help you get noticed better because it will get drowned out by the headlight and fog lights.  The only reason to change the running light to LED is to match the color of the LED headlight.

All you really need and 1/3 the price....can also be found at any auto store.....and still really bright especially compared to the stock bulb.

I used those Sylvania LEDs on my FX to go with the LED headlights. They look really nice.

I found that recommended LED headlight bulbs to have really bad beam patterns when tested, so I would test yours to make sure the beam pattern is good and there is no glare to other road users.  I returned mine.

I posted in another thread about that.

Thanks for the link/reminder Brian.

After giving it a bit more thought, I'm thinking I'm going to install a set of Drop Bars (for several reasons) and can hang lights & horn from those.

I don't care for the looks of these but there are many reasons to go with them.

Well I'm of the opinion that the addition of the extra elimination will be a good thing (providing it doesn't negitivly impact oncoming vehicles.
The spots are very narrow (15°) so this may not be the  scenario you've depicted

Your offering is closer to 2/3 the cost of my choice (it's a two pack) yet mine yields 7 times the  lums (providing the manufacture(s) data is correct & the two bulbs have a simular lump to watt ratio).

I'll stick with mine (again providing it's not an issue to others on the road).

I use this bulb on my DSR and it works great. Beam pattern is fine. I found the installation to be a little tricky but it does all fit in there. You'll have to break a couple tabs off of the white lockring, or grommet...I can't remember right now which piece it was...but it should be obvious and for me it was necessary in order to get it all back together once the new bulb was in. One more thing I recall about the installation was simply unplugging the stock bulb from the plug was very difficult...mine almost seemed like it was glued in.

Thanks for the conformation.

With 73 pages of positive responses over at avdrider,  http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/advmonster-led-headlight.976505/page-73  I'm figuring I won't be disappointed.

And if I am....

most likely some weatherproofing stuff.

I saw somewhere 'round here there is some stuff to put in the plugs (12V charge port, etc) some sort of electri-proofing for the damp.

Silicone grease which does not conduct electricity, also sold as Dielectric Grease, and it wipes away from the contacts when you attach electrical connectors, such that only the parts that are supposed to conduct electricity do so and everything else is blocked from letting moisture in. Moisture + dirt = unintended electrical connections.

Possibly you are experiencing some fusing of the two metal contacts or a suction effect of existing grease in the socket and plug, making it difficult to separate the connectors. I noticed this too, and to pry the connectors apart I used a large flat blade screwdriver to twist and pry the connectors apart a little bit working my way around the connector slowly to get an even prying action.

Yes, works very good and looks nice. The second image is across section of the aluminium pole (cusom made by a local metalworker) to mount the lights on. It's screwed on a already present screw position wich holds the body plastic in place.
