Seat bolt size DSR 2016
« on: February 02, 2017, 05:52:17 PM »

Hi all,

I seem to have lost my seat bolt from the right side of the bike but I was wondering what the size of the bolt is, and if it's a metric or some sort of unc/unf bolt... Does anyone know the size of the bolt? By removing the other side i could take some rough measurements but determining the thread would be way out of my skill level ;)

TIA!

Ton.

Once you know the size, the thread pitch should be fairly standard. Alternatively, take the other bolt to a hardware store to check if the pitch matches.

The first question is whether Zero are metric or imperial sizes. Personally, I hope it's metric as nothing is imperial here in the UK any more. None of my tools anyway. [Insert standard rant about Americans here.]

Thing is that some of the sizes are imperial (Like the mirrors), but some are metric (Allen screw heads)...

Must depend on year and model, 15 FX, every fastener I've moved has been metric.

I believe it's an M8 x 1.25 and 65 mm long?

If you can't tell from the thread, how do you know the mirrors are imperial? Some imperial spanner sizes also fit some metric bolts.

We are also metric in Australia.

It is, I had to replace mine and that's exactly what I got.

@grmarks: Interesting point, I assumed that since the spanner size isn't metric the thread also isn't metric... But if they'd be using imperial spanner sizes with metric thread that'd give me a real headache ;)

I whipped in a M8x1,25x70mm Allenhead, fit like a glove. Thanks all!

Here in the USA most vehicles, 2 and 4 wheel, have been metric for several years. All my spanners are metric.

Sorry a bit ambiguous of me, I was referring to the mirrors. Seems odd to have most bolts being metric but imperial mirror threads.

I thought all zero mirrors were 10mm, reverse thread on the left, like Yamahas. What year and model is yours?

I replaced these bolts with 8mm threaded rod, screwed into a knurled s/s knob, making removal tool less. Saddlebags, tool kit, fuses all require access.

This is already documented: http://zeromanual.com/index.php/Unofficial_Service_Manual#Seat

Aside: is the wiki not enough known yet that we need a whole thread for this?

Weird, I recall searching the unofficial manual with the keywords 'seat bolt', couldn't find it that way... Maybe my Google-fu was weak then.
