Throttle snatchiness on a 14 Zero S 11.4

Hi,

I've proudly owned a Zero S for the last year and a half. Very recently I've come across a constant issue of the throttle being very unsteady. The same throttle position will cause the acceleration to spike intermittently. This usually happens at around 30km/h and 100km/h but may be more related to the throttle position rather than speed. If I use the eco mode and hit the restricted top speed of 114km/h, there is just smooth cruising. Regen is smooth and acceleration at other throttle positions is smooth.

I also can't change the custome settins on the app either (might be unrelated but just in case it matters).

I've just emailed the log files to zero but has anyone had a similar issue?

Bikes been serviced renently (brakes, suspension, fasteners and suspension setup)

My FX has always felt like it had a "lean" serge when in Sport mode. Not to the extent that
yours sounds like though. Mine is a 2013, so, it only has Sport and Eco. If the problem
only occurred after service, I would imagine that they are related. See if problem goes
away in Eco mode for safety reasons until you can get it properly addressed.

Hey Krazy Ed, Cheers for the post. The issue appeared before the service so I had the service to check if it was another mechanical part of the bike interfering with the electronics.
Zero have always been quick with responses so I'm not fussed unlike my dealer. They have not reflected the great service I get from Zero.

You're right about the eco mode, it greatly reduces the spikes in acceleration but not completely. It'/ still not possible to creep slowly without the bike jumping forward and back.

Will post once zero replies with any news.

The '14 Magura throttles are known failure items, so you may want to unplug & check it using an ohmmeter between the brown (pot wiper) and blue (5V) wires.  You should get @ 5K ohms at zero throttle, varying smoothly to a very low ohms reading at WOT without any quick changes or 'itchiness' in the readings.  While you're at it, I'd take the same readings between the black (0V) and brown wires too, which should give the opposite (@ 0 to 5K) readings.

Hey Ray, thanks for the info. I'll get my hands on a mulimeter and check this. If it is the Magura throttle, would there be a recommended replacement or even upgrade? This might be an opportunity to improve the throttle feel in disguise as a fault!

Also, should the readings be linear or spaced is some formulated way? (Sorry about the newb question as I'm not much of a electrical specialist).

Well, here's what I did which I found to be a real improvement (and is still working great), but it's a fair amount of work compared to just plugging in a new Magura.

I believe the Magura pot is linear, so 1/2 rotation should equal @ 2.5K ohms or so.

I haven´t dissasebled the throttle on my S 2014 but assuming it´s the same throttle the MY2010 have try to disassemble and reassemble it. I had some issues with my zero DS 2010 (with closed throttle te bike tried to accelerate a little bit until a point in which I got a throttle error and the bike didn´t work anymore). I dissasembled the throttle and after repositioning the potentiometer in the 0 position it worked fine again. Make sure the screw which is preventing the potentiometer from rotating is properly fixed. Maybe you have a different problem but it´s so easy it´s worth a try.

Hey Ray, Armicb and Krazy ed,
I disassembled the throttle and found the culprit. There is a black adjusting screw which holds the pinion gear of the throttle in place or for adjustment. The pinion gear had moved to the right and caused the spring clip for throttle return to pop out of the slot.
This was clicking through the gears and causing a notchy throttle feel.
I just reset the pinion location, tightened the screw and everything is back to normal!
