Zero S ZF9.8 upgradeable?
« on: August 10, 2016, 04:52:17 AM »

Is it possible to upgrade the Zero S 9.8 to a 13 after you buy it? I know the FXS can be upgraded, but the batteries are far more accessible on the FXS.

Thanks all!

This is just a hunch but... I think the best you can hope for is to add the Power Tank.  The 13 kWh S isn't just the bigger battery, it's also the newer IPM motor...

9.8 is 3 block monolith , 13 is 4 block monolith. It would be possible whether it is economical to do or even an option from Zero due to high labor cost to fit. It's lot more value to buy 13 as it has more advanced high temperature IPM motor also. You also be able claim rebate if purchased in USA to offset cost.

Sales wise from Zero it says you can add a power tank and thats it.
Technically it probably could be done but would not be worth the effort.

Adding a power tank will put a lot of weight up high. 3+PT (1/4 high) which would be worse then the normal 4+PT (1/5 high). PT does affect acceleration and handling.

Yes it is "POSSIBLE".. if you start by thinking nothing is impossible...  ;D

But yes it is possible and can be done. I have dissassembled an entire monolith zf12.5 and know all included  connections.

Like it has been mentionned, the smaller battery is using 3 modules and the larger is using 4.. but the monolith block have the same outher box so there is an empty space for the 4th block.

it will require these things:

- Get one of these block from zero or from a salvaged zero
- Get the BMS wiring harness that is made for 4 modules( unless the 3 modules harness is the same  as for the 4 modules but only connect to 3 modules and have one unconnected  end )
- Get the high current bus bars and bolt  to link to the 3 other modules in parallel
- Reprogram the BMS to make it to know  the proper number of Ah and number of modules connected
- be carefull and wear protective equipement.
