FX chain mod
« on: June 30, 2016, 09:11:26 PM »

Thank you for an awesome resource!
Anyone know if belt can be changed to chain drive? DIY or dealer?
I'm considering a 2015 FX or 2016. I see 'chain' is an option in Zero User Manual.

I'm waiting on AAA info re mobile charging truck service. Would Usage/5.2.3 Finding Chargers be the best place to place my 1st upload?

Zero chain kit instructions, pp. 1-9

Zero chain kit instructions, pp. 10-18

A dealer installed the chain kit on my '14 FX in early 2014 (before I bought it); he described the process as being "very difficult", but didn't elaborate.  In late '14, another dealer replaced the motor on the same bike and had to swap the OEM belt pulley for the chain kit's sprocket; he said it was a "nightmare" to get the pulley off the shaft.

I have an impact gun and wouldn't hesitate to do it myself, but in light of the above dealer comments one might well opt to have a Zero dealer do the work if one is nearby, especially if it turns out one of the pulley setscrews needs extracting or the motor shaft bolt won't come out.

Not sure where the AAA info would go in the wiki - I'm sure someone else could help with that.

Probably similar issues with belt or chain sprocket.
When I changed my gearing, the nearest dealer was 300 miles away.
Rather than ship bike / motor off to have it done, I tried all of the
suggestions I could find with as much force as I felt comfortable
and could not budge it. I took the motor to an electric motor
shop locally they had the old sprocket off and the new one on
in minutes. Other than the difficulty of removing the sprocket,
you have the time consuming issue of removing, or at least
moving the motor around in the chassis.  Start early allow
lots of time for the "project".

I can't imagine what the big deal was. I changed my 2016 FX over to chain with very little effort. Of course having the correct tools helped. Specifically a large two jawed puller that fits around the frame and through the swing arm bearing opening. The whole job took less than two hours.

I think you can rent such a puller at any FLAPS. That would make the job pretty easy

I read the doc, doesnt seem too hard.
