Charging Problem

After my last ride a few days ago I tried to charge my Zero S 2013. But this time that doesn't work.
Since the blinking code is not mentioned within the user manual, I read out the complete log of my bike and tried to find whats going wrong.

I think I found a hint within the logs.

Within the log there is shown an error:
BMS Disable - Low Bat      pack sum: 106814 mV, capacity: 71%, module: 0, status: 0x3B60

This was interesting because 106814mV doesn't seem to be "low bat".

Within the BMS status information I then found:
  - Bank Voltages             :     1    2    3    4    5    6    7    8    9   10   11   ...
                              :  3825 3824 3824 3824 3827 3826 3826 3827 3828 3846 3829 ...
  - Lowest Cell Voltage       :  3824 mV ( Cell 2 )
  - Highest Cell Voltage      :  3828 mV ( Cell 9 )
  - Pack Balance              :  4 mV

Everything seems to be ok. But this was in driving mode and driving works even now.

I put the charging cable on and read the bikes informations again.


The BMS information now states:
  - Bank Voltages             :     1    2    3    4    5    6    7    8    9   10   11   
                              :  3830 3828 3828 3834 3809 3845 3830 1067 6234 3846 3829
  - Lowest Cell Voltage       :  1067 mV ( Cell 8 )
  - Highest Cell Voltage      :  6234 mV ( Cell 9 )
  - Pack Balance              :  5162 mV

OOps, it seems as soon as the charger connects the balancing measures for cell 8 and 9 becomes strange.

I don't know enough about the bikes internal connections but for me it seems to be something like a short within the charger balancing connections.

Does someone already have had this problem?

I would call the dealer and make sure you are registered with zero, you may be eligible for the battery replacement program

Yes, I am eligible for the replacement program. I have first contacted my dealer 5 weeks ago and I don't have a appointment for the replace until today. Not sure how long this lasts...  :-\

This problem stops me from using my bike until Zero replaced the battery. So I was hoping someone here has a quicker solution/hint for me.

What I have learned is that the charger doesn't have a direct connection for balancing the battery. So the failure seems to be on the BMS only while in charging mode.

Does someone have more informations about the BMS mode of operation? Some sort of connecting diagram?

This seems extremely odd.  It is not the charger.  I would be careful. Like NDM said I would leave the bike alone until you get the battery replaced.  Although rare, your bike might have the symptom that was one of the reasons they are doing the battery replacement.  Make sure you have your appointment to send your bike to the factory as soon as possible.

Although as a last resort, try pressing both buttons at the same time on the BMS behind the front rubber cover.  But use something that isn't metal to press them and be careful, one is slightly hidden behind the cover.  That might fix it but perhaps unlikely.  Just get it to the dealer if this doesn't work.

6.2v is unlikely.  I would guess the cell would be close to wanting to burst into flames vs be at that state of charge.  Just in case that is an accurate reading, seriously get the bike to the dealer right away and definitely don't plug it in anymore just in case.

Ok just saw your reply to NDM while I was typing this.  I have more than a dozen friends, Tony Helms, Brian Rice, Jeremiah Johnson who are on this forum, and many more on the facebook owners group that have a 2013 Zero and got a 2016 Zero recently so they wouldn't be without a bike during the battery replacement waiting period, and will probably sell the 2013 once it gets back with a new battery at a higher price (thank you Zero for their sake!) due to the increased range. 

I have had 2 Zero's as well (2012 and 2015) and understand, I would never want to have to ride a gas motorcycle again either.  A 3 year difference is a good time to appreciate new features.  So I would suggest upgrading to a 2016 as soon as you can, and get the 2013 in for the battery replacement.  My buddy Brandon just ordered a 2016 Zero 2 1/2 weeks ago and had it delivered 5 days after he ordered it.  Hopefully you can get yours just as fast so you are not without a bike to ride.

Brandon has upgraded each year and has said it's totally worth it.  He has owned a 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and now a 2016 SR also!  Awesome Brando!  So trust me you will appreciate the advancements from the 2013 to 2016 a lot!

I have to see what the upgrade is worth but the dealer is offering to buy my bike for what I paid plus I save the taxes on a new one, which means that the s I bought has appreciated by $1300, I may jump on it, hopefully a new dsr is in the future  8), its worth it for the suspension alone!

I got my bike back last week, with a new 12,5kW battery. I am very happy that I can now ride my bike again!

After the first ride and charge I checked the logs of my bike. I am surprised that I found a few warning messages about low isolated cells within the NEW battery. Is this normal?

Within the old log there are errors shortly before the battery died:
- BMS Isolation Fault        BMS: 0
- Low Chassis Isolation      98 KOhms to cell 4

The new battery has similar warnings(until now no errors):
- Low Chassis Isolation      99 KOhms to cell 3

Should I be worried that the new Battery will die soon too?
