"welded contactor" error 2015 DS
« on: November 25, 2015, 03:14:24 PM »

So after only 2 short rides on my new 2015 DS (demo model) I'm getting the "welded contactor" error.  Waaah!

I assume you contacted Zero about this and went through the appropriate troubleshooting process before posting on a public forum, right?

Charge up to 100% to ensure the batteries are balanced.  This happened to me in South Carolina on my trip and it wasn't the contactor at all.

I haven't contacted Zero. It happened in the morning after L1 charging overnight.

It's got another issue with the dash - can't get into Display A or Display B.

So I'm towing it 250 miles to the dealer tomorrow. While it's there, think I'll have them install the Denali D2's that just arrived in the mail.

I'll update this thread with what they find.

Almost the same exact thing happened to me with an almost brand-new 2015 S. Rode it a few times, and then it wouldn't boot - welded contactor error.

Long story short, Zero and my dealer fixed it under warranty. Now I'm happy! :)

Well after more than 3 months at the dealership, yesterday I got the bike back. Took it for a 20 mi ride today. No issues.

What did they do over that 3 months?
  • Tried "sealing" the BMS? Didn't work
  • Replaced the BMS. Didn't work
  • Replaced the controller. Didn't work until they "synced it up with the motor".

Plan to take it on my 90 mi commute tomorrow.

Al of this bodes Ill for me, with my BMS Isolation errors, after my very first, 32 mile, ride on my 2015 demo SR. I had really hoped to avoid this stuff by buying a demo, because there is no dealer in my range, and I don't have transport for the bike.

LeftieBiker - I rented a Uhaul trailer for transporting the bike. I towed it with a Toyota Matrix. I had no problems going 75mph towing the bike on the trailer.

I can't tow with my leased Leaf, and my housemate's Prius is the plugin version, and also leased, so no hitch on that, either. I'd have to rent a motorcycle-capable van.

For those wondering why I'm such an idiot, I didn't plan on this scenario. Zero had a dealership in this area. It folded, but talks were in progress with a Harley dealership when I test-rode a DS and FX. You can guess how that turned out. I should have stopped considering Zero right then, but the magnitude of the quality control issues wasn't widely known (at least by me!) when I bought the SR in December. I really thought that getting a demo would at least guarantee me a few *months* of problem-free rising. What I got was roughly 45 minutes.

I'm surprised you would have issues with demos. Generally the demos have the bugs worked out. I think most of the issues have been with brand new bikes.

Yes, that was my impression, too. It appears to have been a mistaken one.

Leftiebiker - Uhaul also rents pickups with trailer hitches. I know its a pain, but in your position it is probably what I'd do.

Another more expensive option is to use UShip.

My 2015 DS has now gone about 200 mi since I got it back with no issues. It is a pleasure to ride.

"Another more expensive option is to use UShip."

That's how I got the bike shipped to me. I was very unimpressed with both the service and the hauler. (If you do use them, remember to add $50-60 to the estimate, because they will, in the final payment process. They also offer the most outrageously expensive "insurance" I've ever seen. $1k for that, and it still has a $500 deductible.)
