Luggage racks for 2014 Zero S which fit standard luggage?
« on: July 05, 2015, 03:10:26 AM »

Hi there - I'm new to buying luggage racks, and I'm trying to understand if anyone makes a rack for the 2014 Zero S that I can strap normal luggage (think small carry-on luggage/roll-aboard) to with bungee cords. I know Zero sells this:

http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_7&products_id=187&zenid=mcbio9rqcen12tj178ugrnqr36

But not sure if that's really designed to hold something larger than the specific GIVI case (which I don't care to buy, as I'm looking to be able to ride to the airport with carry-on luggage for travel, not road-luggage).

Some other things I've found, but again, not sure if these would really fit the bike since most manufacturers don't regularly call out Zero-bike support even if they have it:

Thanks in advance!!

I see no reason you couldn't strap a small carry on bag to the Zero rack. Just watch out for the weight limit / affect on handling. I would suggest tie down straps or Rok Straps for holding the bag in place, not bungees.

Thanks - good call on the Rok straps, will order some.

Just thinking that ideally the carry-on would be strapped on in the same direction as the bike itself ("lengthwise"), and the GIVI rack seems small to support a ~21 inch case in that direction.

There are several packs that would fit the Zero's rack.  I have a friend that just purchased a large semi-soft Triumph rack bag that has a pocket in the rear that fits over the end of a luggage rack plate and is held in place with four straps at the front that fasten to various locations at the rear of the bike.  Also, if you don't need to carry a passenger, there are lots of seat bags that would fit on the passenger portion of the seat. I have an RKA seat pack that uses a fabric plate that attaches to the seat and then the bag uses four Velcro straps that hook to the plate and make is easy to remove the bag when you want to take it with you.  If you can be happy with soft or semi-soft luggage there are lots of options.  Not so much with a hard top box, though.  Your best bet would be the Givi Monolock series as Zero sells.

Thank you for your response. Just to clarify, I already have the luggage - a standard small carry-on/roll-aboard bag you take flights with. I'm trying to find a rack which will be a good fit for it. Sounds like getting the GIVI rack in my first post should be fine, it just seemed like the surface area to hold the bag in place was very tiny..

You can get some very large Givi Monolock cases on that little rack.  I have a 37-liter case for my bike and I think their 46-liter case also works on the Givi mount.  Those big cases can be very handy at times, but don't overload them or it will affect your bike's handling.  If you can find a way to securely fasten your bag to the mount, it should work out fine.  But the Givi Monolock top boxes are not very expensive and that is the way I would go.

Thanks Richard. Makes sense. My challenge is that I'm literally trying to get normal air travel luggage to the airport (I use the bike to commute to the airport). Glad to hear that the rack can likely handle the size/weight. Will give it a shot.

The nice thing about that rack is that it has a lot of holes that you can use to strap on your luggage.  Rok straps are a great way to go, but there are many other types of straps that would work also.  I recommend using cloth straps and to stay away from bungee cords with that rack.  But if you do use bungee cords, don't depend upon the hooks through the rack holes to fasten the luggage.  Instead run the body of the bungee cord through the rack holes and then hook the hooks around the cord at each fastening location.  The connections to the rack should be more secure with that way.

Just pack your things in the Givi side cases and bring them with you ;)

Does anyone know if a 2500 watt Elcon will fit in one of these? Looks like they would. I'm tempted to get them, cut some holes in the bottom for cables to run and use them for secure charger storage on long trips.
