DIY Range extender and power storage...
« on: June 19, 2015, 05:10:21 AM »

I like my XU, which I got 2014 a lot and drive it in the city to work and  each weekend 60 km to my "Expositur" at the country side (50 and 80-100km/h, quite hilly)
and end with 15-25% left energy, so it is quite ok.

Sometimes I tought about  trips in the country-side > 100km and So I am thinking about to build an range extender 2x2.5kWh as side bags and since I have solar power system (4kW peak) it also should function as power storage pre-grid in the meantime. Tesla says US$3000 per 10KW, that would be US$1500 for 5KWh, but I want as a zero owner LiPo Cells not LithiumIon Cells for power (less weight and same as power tank technology.
If I split the PowerPack in two half's of each 14cells I can use them in my 48V (40-58V in fact) system as 4 parallel packs for the solar-inverter.

I got now an offer for 340 (need 336) Cells 4Ah (3,7V, 75g) which has been targeted for tablets but now lay in storage for about one year, and all of the cells are ok (said the seller) for EUR 900.- that would be a little more than a third cheaper than the tesla power storage, without electronics. (each cell has a safety electronics build in).

Since it seemed to me there are some specialists in this forum, I ask for advice:

1)  Can I build Powertanks for zero when putting 6cells in parallel and 28 of them in serie ?

  - should I put 28 in serie and then parallel or vice versa  ?

  - does parallelizing lipo cells need some extra electronics ?

2)  Do I need additional electronics to attach as range extender ?

Note: It need not to be perfect and its seen as an additional feature, anyway I need a storage solution for my solar system, so as a DIY, doing some experiments before building, would also be in the range of this project.
