Accessory Port
« on: September 23, 2014, 06:11:14 AM »

The 2012 S/DS manual mentions an "accessory port" on page 5-28 when discussing the Fuses. Where on the bike can I tap into this "accessory port"?

There is a connector on the wiring harness. If I remember right it is under the left fairing but you may have to search for it. Harlan could give you more specific instructions.

I bought Zero's wiring adapter kit (from Harlan) to connect from this harness connector to a "cigarette lighter" type of accessory socket. However, it would be a lot less money if you made that yourself, except it may be difficult to find a mating connector for the one on the harness.

Thanks trikester. I'll probably end up buying the cigarette adapter from Harlan. Where on a 2012 S/DS would it mount? Near the handlebars?

Yeah, my 2013 came with the cigarette adapter fitted. Horrible clunky thing in my opinion. As I had no intention of using it, I traced the wires close to the accessory port, cut them just passed the lighters fuse, and line spliced in my own accessory harness using Honda style connectors.

All part of a larger project. (piccies this weekend if all goes well)

Did they set up the 2013 like the 2012 where the accessories come off a fuse on the fuse block and a separate wire is run for ground?

I have a surface mount USB port I got at autozone for $15 or so.  wired straight off the accessory fuse on the fuse block.  Took all of 30 minutes to install it.

Do you have pictures of the install?

Your using a USB to act as a connector for a 12V power source?  ???
Risky, as all USB devices are rated by the USB standard to expect a 5V source.

Personally I just used these.

I seriously doubt that anyone would be selling a USB connector port if it didn't have the 12V to 5V converter built in. But it would definitely pay to check to make sure before using it on 5V devices. Somewhere it should have its specs (input and output) printed on it.

It's right under the tank cover. Just take off the seat and black center piece. Reach under the the fuse block and there are two wires (Blue and Black) that lead to a connector that is covered by a black rubber bung. It's about 13v when power is on.
