2014 Zero SR constant and loud squeaking rear brakes
« on: March 13, 2014, 10:02:39 PM »

When I first rode the SR it didn't have this problem but now the noise is loud and constant and annoying.  I try using a can of compressed air to blow the dust off of the rear brakes and I see a cloud of dust but it comes back.  Also I tried using water to wash the rear brake but it just keep on coming back.  Any advise besides changing the rear brake pads?

On my SR they only squeak when during light braking (and sometimes after braking).
In my case it's not bad enough to warrant action but when those pads are due to be replaced it will be with something with more bite and less squeal :)

I have a 2013 DS and, while the brake pads are different from 2014 models, the pads do squeal particularly when wet. Right now I'm sourcing replacement pads (after 6500 miles in a year!) through the dealer with a different compound for more bite.

Remove the pads, sand them and re-install.

My 2012 S was also having a whining sound from the rear breake when it was new.
But after a disassemble and greasing the edges of the pads with cobber paste the whining sound was gone.
I think they don´t use grease when they putting the brakes together at the Zero factory.

To ensure top function you should probably also have to take the brake caliper piston out and lubricate it with technical silicone
+ give it some polish so it is total glossy.
Not easy because you also need to have the brake fluid out of the system.
But after the opertation you will never have problems with the brake again  :)

When the brake piston is is polished it will pull back into the caliper and the breaking pads will not touch the brake disc when
you don´t breake.
Most disc breakes have a tendency to hang slightly and it can lead to power loss and squeaky brakes.

My breakes on my 2013 Zero also hang a bit so when you push it you can hear the pads touching the disches.

Perhaps a way to win more mileage on a charge  :D

So far not a squeak out of my 2014 Zero's brakes.   :)  The rear brake does squeak a little when being pushed backwards, but not when going forward.   ???

It started out with a rearward squeaking and then a forward squeaking, it squeaks when I'm pushing it into the garage, riding slow or fast.  It drives me crazy.  Can you imagine a totally quite bike except for the squeaking >:(.  It is a little better after blowing the dust out and washing I hope its just the break in period.

If you have squeal shims, put a bit of copper grease on each side of the shim.  If you dont have squeal shims put some on the back of the pads where it contacts the piston (you don't need a lot of it).

It should dampen the pad as it vibrates against the piston.

Could be the caliper pistons are bit stiff and not returning fully?
My Divvy 900 (SecaII in the US) is a proper sod for this and regularly needs its calipers re-greasing.

If you disassemble the brake (do it only if you know what you do) have a close look which part is touching and sliding at what point.

I looked to all the braking pads parts that slides on the bolt and at the brass spring/clamp - there was no side of the pads that didn't have sharp-edges :'(

I have deburred each edges, polished the parts and used copper grease to make the parts slide easier.

At the moment it looks good hope it will stay a bit longer this way!

BTW Copper grease works from -30°C to 1100°C therefore don't use other grease it will become dangerous if your brakes get hot!

Interesting topic - my 2012 ZF9 brakes have always screeched and squealed. Initially I thought it was because they were new and hadn't been broken in, but after 7K miles it still screeches when I brake. I'll have to try one of these remedies.

My brakes are no longer squeaking when braking or when pushing the bike backward.  Everything is quiet now - not that the rear brake has gotten any stronger.   ::)
