What to do with a 2010 DS?
« on: February 16, 2014, 12:49:48 AM »

My dilemma - I have a 2010 DS, a 2012 DS, and a 2013 FX. The 2010 DS is low mileage and the battery has been kept charged. However, nobody wants one of these 2010 vintage electric motorcycles anymore.

I'm asking for suggestions of what to do with this 2010 DS. Suggestions can be either serious or comic but keep it clean and not personally or factory insulting please. This was a very good electric bike to own and ride in the by-gone primitive days of 2010! Good grief, it won't even talk to my iPod!

BTW - Harlan used one of the batteries as a portable DC power supply, so that's one good suggestion.

Maybe you could donate it to the AMA museum.    :)

One day, very early electric motorcycles are likely to be in demand by collectors.  All you have to do is live long enough and keep the bike long enough to enjoy this benefit of being an early adopter.   ;)

I think it'll be wasted for the most part unless its used for what its designed for.   I think you may be marketing it if you tried to sell it in the wrong place.  For example not to many people would want an electric bike that gets 30-50 milies on a charge in the country where there's lots of long roads and people would prefer one that has higher range like the 2012+ years.   However, if you market it in a small town (like I am in Santa Cruz) or large city (like San Francisco) that bike would have a demand and should sell pretty quick if you sell it for a fair price, not asking $7500 for a used 2010 as I saw a most posting on craigslist.  I picked my DS up with 600 miles two years ago for $4200 and was really happy with that price, its served me well.

Again its a perfect commuter for in town or around the city.

I got two DS 2010 and 3  X 2009.

The Ds 2010 battery are twice the size of the XU , X and MX batteery size so with the "4kWh" DS battery i rebuilt battery for the X 2009 that are now becoming very rare and prople are looking for these.

Otherwise built a electric snowblower if you have snow in yoru area...

Doctorbass, you just made my year!  That is the most amazing snowblower EVER!  Can you post a video of it in action with natural sound.  I assume you need to use it regularly.   ;)

Good suggestions!

Here's my reply to those:

Voltage is listed as 53V

I'm about to turn 79 so I don't think I can wait for antique value to materialize.

I've tried to sell it locally as a commuter bike for $2000 but so far, no takers.

Snowblower? I live at the beach in Southern California - nuff said? Maybe a portable air conditioner, for our winter heat waves ;)
But that is  great snowblower, Doc. Maybe a lawn mower, but we are getting away from lawns here due to lack of water. I don't have a lawn anymore.

Thanks all. Keep em coming folks.

Use it as a battery backup along with solar to help power the house?

I plan on getting an inverter when I get my bike and use it as a back up battery source till I get time to build a place designed around 12 / 24 dc volts. Then I might use it as a primary source of power and charge it off site =D

I almost  my 2010 as a power supply for an Eco event once. PA & LED stage lights for an hour is no problem. It's why I added an Anderson plug lead connected directly to the battery so I can plug in an inverter or ideally 48-12v DC to DC converter. Add signage and PR and any Eco marketing types love it. So maybe promote it to marketing companies  or solar companies ?

What about as a Pit bike for racers   ?

Dr bass you are a fucking legend
