I was wondering if anybody had info regarding this protocol, in order to develop specific apps (like setting max speed lower than 90 km/h, different displays,...).

I can almost guarantee you that API isn't public.  You could try asking Zero themselves, but if it existed, I'd hope to have come across it by now.

Sorry. The API for communication to the 2013 Zero Motorcycles is proprietary and has not been made public.  Since we are a smaller company it is not possible for us to support very many independent, third-party developers, and we are likely to make future changes to the protocol to bring new features to market, which might negatively affect compatibility with applications.  Finally, we would likely need to certify any applications to insure they didn't create safety risks for customers.  It's just not possible for us to do this and keep working to deliver the best electric motorcycles possible.

We will be looking to license access to the protocol at some point in the future to selected developers and invite any potential partners to send me emails outlining any proposals.

Regards,
Aaron

Thanks Aaron ! If possible, let the user set the max speed in the eco mode to lower values (like the urban 50 km/h limitation in France). Best,

Good feedback.  I want to confirm that I'm not missing a reason why we shouldn't do this, but added to our development backlog to try and get to this with our next release.

I second this suggestion. When I want to cruise at say 45 mph to conserve range it would be very helpful to just program (using iPod) the ECO top speed at that and hold the throttle open. I tried this on an open highway in Utah by setting it at the lowest level now available, 60 mph, and riding with the throttle held for what would have been a higher speed. It was almost like cruise control because the bike held a steady 60 mph without my having to keep checking the speedo. At the time I was thinking it would be good if Zero could let the programed max go lower than 60.

My Zero S 11.4 is on order. Unfortunately I just signed for two year contract for Nokia Lumia 920. Is there any plans to make the app for Windows Phone 8?

Sorry.  We have no plans to support Windows 8 phones at this time.

According to one research report, Kantar Worldpanel, which reflects most market share data "In a three-month period ending in April 2013, the research firm found that Android devices accounted for 51.7% of smartphone sales in the U.S., compared to 41.4% from the iPhone and 5.6% from Windows Phone devices."

We'll keep monitoring the success of Windows 8 and other types of phones in the market so we can adjust our plans as they gain market share, but must focus our resources right now.

You can always use an iPod Touch.  No plan required and they are pretty reasonably priced.

You can get a refurbished iPod touch for a fairly reasonable price.

I'm using the iPod Touch.

One thing Zero should definitely change is the need to have the App turned on after the bike. We should be able to leave our devices on and active and turn off the bike. When the bike is turned back on it should make contact with the active App.

When I'm riding in beautiful places I often stop, get off, and walk to a good photo vantage point. I want to turn off the bike and it's a hassle to also have to turn off the App on my iPod. The bike's Bluetooth should be able to make contact with the external device under all circumstances, no matter which is turned on first. >:(

My 2013 S has the ability to "reconnect" if the app is open and the bike is turned on. The app changes from demo-mode and a pop-up message comes on that says it is reconnected.

You can buy android phones for less $50 and just not use sim, lot cheaper than Ipod
I sure your friends even have ones lying around not used as they upgrade.

My 2013 FX sure won't do that! I wonder why the FX would be different than the S? Doesn't make sense. ???

I would love to see a Zero 'community' and im sure it would be easily achieved with some modification to the app.

I mean something similar to Strava that I use with my push bike, my cycle computer logs my rides and then uploads the distance, average speed, calories burned etc. to the website where it compares it with friends etc.  For the Zero's you could have it showing your total mileage, average weekly mileage, power used and fuel cost saved etc.  It would be very good advertising for Zero for potential customers to see owners in their area actually getting out and riding the bikes.

spelunker, are you using an android device? I suspect the difference is the application platform, not the bike.
