120/80-16 fit rear DS?
« on: May 10, 2013, 08:58:48 AM »

Anybody try fitting a 120/80-16 to the rear of a 2012 DS?

I'm looking at an Avon AM26

I am going to put on a 120/90-16 on my DS next week.   Going with this tire:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/29/393/14732/ITEM/Bridgestone-TW40-Trail-Wing-Dual-Sport-Rear-Tire.aspx

Not a lot of good choices for that stupid 16" rear rim.

I think it will fit no problem, there is plenty of clearance.

I would be curious to know what others have been using for replacement tires.    My rear is not going to make 3K miles, just melted away.

Ah haa.. Curiously i am too looking for replacing tires on my DS 2011 and to get the 16 and 17" tire the same brand and type and model  it is pretty difficult !!

I want a low profile wich is not  easy... i am looking for 70 profile on rear

Here is my best choice from now:

 Kenda Cruiser K671

Rear: 140/70P-16
Front: 110/80H-17
The new rear tire should  give me 30 more mm width for a better look.

Or  Pirelli Sport Demon

Rear: 130/70 - 16 M/C 61P TL
Front: 110/80 - 17 M/C 57H TL

Or Shinko 006 Podium

Rear: 130/70 - 16
Front: 110/70 - 17

I have measured the clearance between the tire and the belt and i have 22mm. The other side have pretty much.

so theoricly i could add 40mm and get a 150mm on rear but again finding a brand and model that have 17 inch tire that match is pretty difficult too!

Do you know if it is really necessary to have the exact same tire model on fronta and rear ? If not the choice are alot more interesting !

You're going to want a lot more clearance than you'd think. It's amazing how much tires move around under stress and heat.

As far as looks go, if there was ever a situation where form should follow function, it's in tires.

Please let us know how it fits. That's an extremely agressive tread. I'm hoping that going to a street tread smooths it out a little.

Looking at the clearance, I'm amazed that a 17 won't lace up with no cutting of the swingarm. I may try that route this winter.

There was a Thread http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=2127.msg8035#msg8035

I have an appointment next Friday at the TÃœV because I will run a 120/80 -R16 on my 2012 DS and I need to change it in the paper, if not I run in trouble with police or the all 2 years TÃœV examination ???

If my calculation is correct the speed will be 1% lower so it should not bother and is like normal profile tolerance. (We have the law the speedometer has to show a faster but never a lower speed.)

I seem to be the only DS rider who rides a lot of dirt.   I have to have some tires with some bite as all of my rides start and end with 3 miles of dirt road.  Just last week I got caught in the downpour and rode home in the mud so street tires are not a good option for my riding requirements.

I think I will put a rear tire of the same tread on the front when that one wears out... there is no good front specific match.   I have been told that it is OK to put a rear tire on the front but not a front on the rear.

Another reason to lust after a 2013:  standard tire sizes.

Trikester fitted a 17" rim on his 2012 DS.   It was not trivial.  There is a post on this forum about that modification.

Here is what my OEM rear tire looks like after only 2600 miles:

These tires are really soft rubber.

I had the same "problem" at 2200 miles, than I tried to find a 110/90 what was not so easy. I got a Michelin M45 110/90-16 but it is gone in 1500 miles :o

I couldn't find a dirt tire at all, but I use the bike most on paved roads and look for a street tire.
My choice:
Michelin City Grip Rear 120/80-R16
Hope the rear last longer because it has no tread in the middle.http://www.motorradreifendirekt.de/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?details=Ordern&typ=D-112964&cart_id=24622743.1100.16781&Cookie=&ranzahl=1&Breite=120&Herst=&Quer=80&Felge=16&Load=&S_Z=-&Speed=&weiter=0&last_sort=&kategorie=&Ang_pro_Seite=10&sort_by=&gesanzeige=&rf=&Transport=P&tyre_for=&F_F=&dsco=1100&sowigan=&RunFlat=&m_s=1&profil=&Achse=&LoadRange=&s_p=&x_tyre_for=&rsmFahrzeugart=

I think the constant torque will really wear out more than one think, and even if the bike don't feel so nippy because power is not raising up suddenly like an ICE it has steady torque in both direction.

Sorry for the long links!

I might order the Kenda cruiser K671

Rear: 140/70-16
Front: 110/80h/17

about 150$ for both.

I will let you know if it's a succes

Nice tire,

I just looked to the specs: (Thanks to protomech)
the DS 2011 front rim is a 2.15x17, the DS 2012 is 2.50x17 both use 100/80 17,
The S 2012 has a 3.00X17 for a 110/70 17.

Don't you think a 2.15 is a bit slim for 110/80?

I have only little experience with rims and tires, also I was thinking of a 110 Front wheel but it is really tight at the DS-fork. I know with your add batteries the fork will set lower, but if I accelerate my fork "come off" again.

I searched and completely missed that. Exactly what I wanted to know! Thanks much.

OK, I seem to be in the minority here as I ride my DS in a lot of dirt.   As such, I was really disappointed in my tire options but after more research I went with a 120/90-16 Rear Bridgestone Trailwing TW40.   Good news, it all fits if anyone else wants to go that route you can do so with confidence as there is plenty of room for that size of tire.   I will report back if there are any negative impacts on range or power but it does fit just fine as you can see from the pics below.

Looking forward to having a little more bite into the soft stuff and sand.

There is not a front that can match this tire in a 17 so I am probably going to mount another rear tire on the front wheel when it is time.
