European charger idea
« on: May 15, 2012, 11:25:39 PM »

Because 240V is the standard outlet in Europe would it be possible to have the optional second charger fitted to the bike permanently and always charge with 2KW? A single 240V outlet would handle that without problems. Almost all outlets in my country are 16Amp.

Big question is then, where would you mount the second charger and how would you waterproof it.

Any ideas from Zero S/DS owners?

The Delta-Q chargers are rated IP66, proof against jets and sprays but not against immersion. The Zero doesn't really provide any protection to the onboard charger currently, so I wouldn't imagine waterproofing a second charger to be a big concern.

Maybe you could mount the second charger under the seat or to the underside of the tail section? Dimensions for the Delta-Q are listed at 28.0 x 24.6 x 11.0 cm (11 x 9.7 x 4.3").

Why though since you would likely only be doing this at home using two different circuits, cause if you did it at work or someone gave you permission, you might trip their breaker cause they probably have other stuff on their circuit.

I usually pull about 8-8.5 A on 110v with one charger. Two chargers together should pull about 8.5A on 220v.

If his outlets are 16A then he shouldn't have much of a problem..

Forum member offthegrid (https://www.facebook.com/lifeoffthegrid) had mounted a second charger under the tail section of his 2012 S (he built a subframe that slid between the seat and the bike frame that moved ther seat back and freed up some under-tail room). He's since acquired a third charger and has fastened them to the sides of the bike, so he can run all 3 from a US Level 2 240V charging station. Maybe he'll comment some more on his setup. He says he can still mount charger #4 under the tail again.

I suppose you have to make your own custom power cord, but that's not difficult.

Thanks! This looks promising
Fitting 4 chargers may be overkill for me but two should be relatively easy to do.
The Dutch climate is pretty wet and I ride in the rain often so waterproofing would be required, especially under the tail where lots of tyre spray will hit the charger.

DoctorBass has mentioned integrating a second charger into his 2011 S.

He has some pictures here where he has disassembled the Delta-Q charger:

You could probably rig up a plexiglass shield to protect the charger from direct tire spray. Incidental exposure to water should not be a problem.

I like the idea of installing a second charger .. or replacing it with a beefier charger.

Hey guys, this is Terry.  I am awaiting the 4th charger to arrive any day now.  I had soldered custom powerpoles into the cords leading to the Anderson connectors because at the time Zero didn't have any splitters produced.  But a few days ago they arrived and now I can use a Y-connector to connect 2 chargers to one port with out my custom wiring mess.  I am contemplating removing the stock charger from under the bike and putting it on top under the tank bag to increase airflow to the motor to assist with cooling.  Seemed to work pretty well for the TTXGP guys.  As it is my motor gets too hot.  But I did see 94 mph on the speedo coming back from Tampa two days ago on Interstate 4.  Full tuck and the side mounted chargers seem to help aerodynamics by deflecting air from my boots and legs, as since I put them there I seem to zoom past 85 mph a lot faster than I did before when passing on the interstate.  I will try to post here as much as possible, but I post daily here: http://www.facebook.com/lifeoffthegrid.

If you have facebook, please "like" the page for me and follow the progress.  1500 mile roadtrip to Tennesee for Bonaroo in less than 2 weeks.  A little nervous about that lol.  There's 250 miles of no level 2 charging stations haha.  Wish me luck!  Thanks!

Hey Terry, nice to see you on here. Harlan says you and I should have a competition to see who can make the craziest modifications to their Zero lol.  I would love to help with your development and will send you my results on the overheating.

I just got licensed to race on a 2012 Zero stock with CVMA. While removing the lower fairings and charger will help, there are some more customizations that can be made. However I think there may be more than just engine cooling needed. I have gotten an untweaked 2012 up to 98 mph, on a cool day. Now I want to break 100 on a desert track.
