2012 Zero S ZF9 acceleration
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:33:51 PM »

I'm about 200 lbs in full gear + backpack.

Tests were done in sport mode, level ground, no wind. Initial battery charge was 10 bars of 11.

Acceleration was performed by holding a steady speed, quickly twisting the throttle to the stop, and timing until the speedometer shows the updated speed. Measurements were done by counting seconds in my head (to the nearest half second), and are probably self-consistent but inaccurate.

10-20mph 3.5s
20-30mph 3.5s
30-40mph 3.0s
40-50mph 3.5s
50-60mph 4.0s
60-70mph 4.0s

Note in particular that acceleration from say 10-50 mph will be rather quicker than just summing the segments above, as I probably lose at least a half second for each segment in the bike starting to accelerate.

I'm going to try to do take some better measurements and update this - so treat it as a work in progress.

Another data point: there's a particular twisty bit that I like to run along on my way in to work. Coming off a controlled-access freeway exit loop (clockwise as viewed from above), I can accelerate from about 35 mph on the exit loop to 67 mph along the straight before I start braking. My GS500 can accelerate up to about 75 mph along that same stretch.

What do you suppose the 0-60 mph time is?  It feels like about 8 seconds with my 2011 S.

For comparison, here some actual instrumented performance numbers obtained by Motorcycle Consumer News when they tested a 455 pound Vectrix scooter, with a claimed 21 kW motor that produced 18.5 hp on a rear wheel dyno.

Top speed 68.5 mph; 1/4 mile 18.94 sec. at 68.23 mph; 0-60 mph in 12.47 sec.

Counting seconds - so not terribly accurate - I get about 10s to do 0-60 in sport mode.

Thanks for posting!.. that's interesting data.

Once i'll get my 2011 brand new  DS i'll check that with the GPS and the cycle analyst with datalogger option and we will compare

I just read an article in Apr Motorcycle Consumer News. They reviewed the Vectrix VX 1 electric scooter. The author said the scooter goes "0-60 mph in 12.47 seconds putting it in a dead heat with the Zero DS" so I guess that's the 0-60 time for the DS too. My 2011 certainly seems faster.

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/comparisons/122_1011_brammo_enertia_vs_zero_s/viewall.html
2010 Zero S: 0-60 in 11.9s

http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1066989_2011-zero-s-electric-motorcycle-first-ride-report
2011 Zero S: 0-30 mph in < 2s (really? seems unbelievably fast)

http://motorcycles.about.com/od/zero/ss/2011-Zero-S-Review-The-Electric-Motorcycle-Grows-Up-Sorta_3.htm
"[2011 S] Parking lot speeds are attained with scooter-like acceleration, but higher velocities accumulate more rapidly, with the majority of responsiveness found above roughly 30 mph." Doesn't jive with the above.

Couple more tests that I just ran:

2012 Zero S ZF9 0-30 mph, Eco Mode: 8.0s
2012 Zero S ZF9 0-30 mph, Sport Mode: 5.0s
2006 GS500 0-30 mph, 3.5s
2006 GS500 0-60 mph, 7.0s // not doing a 5k rpm clutch drop, just a quick street start

Richard230, oobflyer, I'm curious if your bikes are substantially faster than mine. Given the extra weight of the 2012 ZF9 vs the 2010 S (273 lbs => 341 lbs) and the modest power improvement, 10s 0-60 sounds about right vs the 12s 0-60 for the 2010 bike.

The slow 0-60 time is due to that sluggish start. Once you get to about 25 and the Li ions start to flow, acceleration is really good. Didn't they program that slow start into the bikes after 2010?

Motorcycle Consumer News also tested the 2011 Zero DS and performed a complete test on the bike. (That test is outlined in my thread in the Zero forum, halfway down page 5. I also provided an extensive summary of their full test of the Vectrix scooter in the Vectrix forum.) Here are the performance results from their testing of the 2011 Zero:  Top speed with a fully charged battery, lying on the tank, is 68 mph. 0-60 takes 11.35 seconds and the quarter mile passes by at 19.31 seconds at a speed of 66.86 mph. That is very similar to what they achieved on the much heavier Vectrix.  I would think that the 2012 models would accelerate faster, but perhaps their gearing is taller and that could slow down the 0-60 time.

I can try to estimate my 0-60 acceleration, but I have do not have much trust in my ability to estimate seconds while I am riding (as I ride faster time seems to slow down   ;)  ).  Personally, my bike seems to take a while to get moving from a dead stop and if I had to guess I would say that a 0-60 time of around 12 seconds sounds right to me. In any case, I am sure that some magazine will publish an instrumented test of the 2012 Zero S in the near future, based upon Zero's aggressive marketing department.

Does anyone tried to reprogram their Alltrax controller on their 2011 or 2010 zero ?

Many parameter can be tuned like the throttle curve, max current, etc...

The agni 95R is capable of up to 84V and on the 2011 and 2010 zero it is running at 14s limn battery ( 53V nom)

Here is Quebec ( Canada) the actual regulation put all electric motorcycle in teh same group... you can have a 10kW motor or a 100kW motor they are all considered as 125cc for the registrations... so

Why not!.. I know that puting more power to the motor will reduce the brush life... but for those who want pure fun.. it could be a nice thing to try....

Imagine just modifying the gear ratio and to repalce the controlelr and add a boost pack of 24V more... that could use the 100% true power of that great motor!

Oh that is  interesting!.. My electric Giant Dh bicycle  does exactly the same!.. i'm in the 19 sec on 1/4 mile and max speed of 70MPH ( GPS) 8)

But.. i'll love my DS2011 anyway ;D

I haven't tried to measure the acceleration on my ZF9 - but I think my iPhone has a stopwatch  ;)

Doctorbass,

That's a d...fast bicycle...what motor & batteries have you got in it?
The Canadian regulation is quite interesting, in Spain they are treating them in mostly of the aspects like a regular motorcycle -although they are a bit confused with power and driving licence  ;) (you save some taxes though...).
