I'm getting more current limiting on my 2016 FXS than I did last winter, and it isn't even cold yet. Riding home from work yesterday, I could barely maintain 50 mph at 35% SOC. Ambient temperature was 57 degrees and pack temperature was 66 degrees. I've read different threads here that confirm lower temperatures and SOC are big factors in this, but I'm trying to get a sense if others experience the same degree of cutbacks. Could there be a few cells that are going bad my batteries? Is there anything else that I can do to curb this? Charging at work isn't an option for me unless I pull out the batteries every day and bring them inside, which would be a total pain. As a year round rider, I worry that this will make my bike unusable/unsafe for winter commute if it gets worse. When I chose the FXS over the SR, I had considered the nominal range and speed would be plenty for my needs. Range is still fine, but the speed limitation is a big concern.

And that degradation is not the same from cell to cell. Not that this is any real news to me, as my first two electric motorcycles used Hi Power Li batteries and they were all over the map after they went through about 50 cycles of charging and discharging. I believe that Zero's BMS is very conservative and does its best to insure the health of the entire battery pack, even if that means cutting power when it senses battery stress resulting from even one bad cell that is not keeping up with the rest in the pack.

Thanks for the reply. Re-reading the Zero warranty information, it covers a loss in capacity, but not other measures of service degradation. Hypothetically, this could be interpreted that even if the discharge current was drastically limited due to a single bad cell, it wouldn't qualify as a warranty claim as long as the good cells retained their capacity. I'm not inclined to go down the warranty road right now because 1) the dealer is so far away, 2) I have a lot of time left on the battery warranty and 3) I have my doubts if it would pay off. I will if it gets worse and/or when it gets closer to the end of the warranty period.

This is where using a volt meter pays off ... if you can see the voltage you will know when your bike goes into limit mode.
I suspect you were at or below 96vdc while riding at 50mph the other day (this doesn't account for how thick the air is or how windy either) ...
At this point I think it is silly to even consider winter riding without using a volt meter.
Installing a Cycle Analyst is worth its weight in gold and it isn't too hard to do. If not you can always hook up a multi-meter like Terry does for long trips so you can keep an eye on the battery voltage.
I would suspect to prove a capacity issue with the bike it would have to be thrown on a dynometer in a controlled environment and its range / charge / discharge capacity tested there ...
On my 2013 S (original battery) at around 96vdc the bike will start to reduce power output ... at 93vdc you are in or really close to limp home mode ... I have taken it down to 90vdc once on a really cold day and barely got into my garage before charging. It was at 0SOC after it started to charge ... before then, with 90vdc on my CA I had 3 bars left on my SOC indicator before powering the bike down.
You cannot trust the SOC indicators ... get a volt meter ;)

Update, but not really. My bike has been at the dealer for over a month to diagnose the issue. Initially, they said that they updated the firmware and it tested fine, and then I asked them to ride it at lower SOC and they were able to reproduce the inability to maintain highway speed. (Side note, it's unfortunate they they updated the firmware, but I didn't feel that I had a choice if I wanted them to diagnose the bike.) When I called on Tuesday (4/24), they said they were sending additional data back to Zero and waiting for their engineers to propose a solution. I feel frustrated, but at least am hopeful that they'll do something with it after having it for so long.

FWIW, my 2106 FXS did the same thing. I forget the exact SOC when it would drastically reduce speed, but I also couldn't go over 50 mph. It was also during the winter. My FXS got totaled in January when some idiot in a car slid on some ice and took it out, so I now have a DSR.
It could be just the BMS doing its job, but when I mentioned that to my dealer he thought it sounded strange. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Maybe some other FX/FXS owners will chime in about their experience.

Installing a Cycle Analyst is worth its weight in gold and it isn't too hard to do. If not you can always hook up a multi-meter like Terry does for long trips so you can keep an eye on the battery voltage.
Not to hijack this thread, but could you please elaborate on your Cycle Analyst setup. I looked at their website and they have several different models and connection configurations. Thanks
