Title: Battery life
Post by: M@2015DS on December 04, 2017, 05:29:18 AM
Got the latest firmware update for my 2015 DS about 2 months or so ago. Pretty soon after that my onboard charger went out. I am not using an external charger to charge up the bike overnight.

The problem that I have been having since the update is that the battery goes through the first 7% really quickly. Like after only 3 miles mostly on city riding. Used to get much farther before getting that low.

Also, I pretty consistently lose about 8% instantly in the mid-range area. I will look down and see that I am at 49% and then look back down after only a few seconds and the battery will be at 40%. This is at highway speeds 60-70mph.

Before I got the firmware update and my onboard charger went out this would never happen.

Has anyone else ran into this issue or have any ideas on what this may be? Are the batteries become unbalance? Is BMS malfunctioning?

Since I can't charge at work the batteries have to last for my total commute. Should be no problem with the range the bike has but when I lose 7% real quick at the beginning and randomly lose 8-10% around the middle it makes me worried I won't make it one of these days. Especially if it gets any worse.

Remember that % SoC is a calculation with different modes.

Usually, if there a step-wise jump in the SoC indication, it means the mode has switched.

I've written up a section on the wiki attempting to cover this:

There is a lot of conversation around the latest update which I am too fatigued to track but essentially it sounds like the process of estimation involves some tuning to the rider's habits and the bike, and that you may get some inaccuracies early on until it stabilizes.

If, in any case, you are in doubt about the SoC and need to estimate range to empty, look at the battery voltage while at rest and compare it to the minimum for 0% at-rest (~92V). This will be less robust in cold temperatures and/or with a large cell imbalance (hundred mV or so).

Questo articolo mi è molto utile.

My MY16 Zero S does this too. The SOC indicator is inaccurate and, going by voltage readings, my range ability is almost perfectly in line with a Zf9.8 battery instead of the Zf13.0 that I have. I ran the battery down to 0% a few weeks ago and was still able to ride 10 miles to get home. The resting voltage when I got home was 96v. I would rather contend with a faulty SOC display than reduced battery capacity but it seems I've got a bit of both.
